Are box drop handlebars any good?

I like that kind of curve, they look cool and I like the feel for steering if they are wide enough, but my neck won’t let me ride like that for long anymore.
 
Sounds like you'd do better with just a set of cut-down flat bars.
I do have a bike with those but I like the drop bars better because I rest my hands on the tops of the handlebars and the hoods of the brake levers.

Flat bars and risers have only one hand position and it gets uncomfortable after only a few miles.

Have you considered bullhorn bars? You get the top positions, and there is less bar to tape ;)
I have. I like the homemade ones made from upturned drop bars better than the ones that you can buy.

This is my commuter bike which has the most comfortable handlebar setup I've ridden so far.
