Re: Bar Fly - (Mock Up with Wheels)

Love those Felt wheels!

Re: Bar Fly - (Fender and Chain Guard Patina)

Was finally able to get working on stripping the paint of my old Felt fender.

I love the smell of paint stripper in the morning... :)

Looks clean enough, but still to a lot of elbow grease to clean it up.

One that was cleaned up, I pickled the steel with some vinegar, then started the patina process with some salt water in a sprayer. It's looking nice and crusty on the fender.

Then add in a little hydrogen peroxide, and sit back

And voila. I'll clean the a little more, then hit them with the satin clear, followed by matte clear, and they will be good to go.

I'm still thinking about my crank problem... Not exactly sure what to to there quite yet...

Re: Bar Fly - (Fender and Chain Guard Patina)

Interesting patina process, I have soaked some parts in salt water, but never thought of doing your steps. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Bar Fly - (Fender and Chain Guard Patina)

I found myself in Campbell, CA the other day, and swung in to The Cruiser Shop to check it out. They are a Ruff dealer, as well as Project 346, HBBC and others. Great selection, and if you are local, I highly recommend making a trip there.

Anyway, I saw these Project 346 tires, and I really liked the tread pattern, so they came home with me.

I also found these ape hangers hanging on the wall. I'm not sure they will stay black, but we'll see...

Really happy with the the stance on this build.

I still haven't solved the crank problem yet. Tried oxalic acid, but nothing. Need to head to the drawing board on this.

Re: Bar Fly - (She's a roller!)

Well, she's a roller. Found some time today to mount the fender and chain guard, and get the rest of the drivetrain installed, and took her for a spin. She rides low. Really low. No need for a kickstand, she rests happily on a pedal.

Hopefully I'll find time to get the patina on the ape hangers next weekend. Then I need to start thinking about the shifter mount...

I'm in Singapore for a week, so no updates for a bit. I have a stretch goal of barcycling on her next weekend. We'll see...

Re: Bar Fly - (Back in the Game)

After trips to Asia, Hawaii and the Midwest, I am back and I've made some great progress. In fact, she's nearly done. Here's my first of a couple updates.

When I last posted, she was rolling, but there was still quite a bit to do. Let's start with the apes. I picked them up at the Cruiser Shop in Campbell, but they were dead stock, and had no patina.

I played around with sanding off some of the paint, and dulling the rest of it, and it inspired my patina efforts.

These are the bars with a little patina on them - probably vinegar and salt water at this point.

These are the bars after a the patina had some time to settle in - coated with one coat of satin and one coat of matte clear. I think the red sparkle grips are a nice touch for this ride.

For inspiration on where to apply patina, I looked at Barney - my barn find '52 Green Phantom. The tops of the bars, right at the bend, is rust's favorite hangout...

More to come in a bit.

Welcome home! Love the bars!
