I recently put hooks in the ceiling in my garage and hung up several of my bikes . I found that hanging them by the front wheel gets them up out of the way pretty well. I spaced the hooks 24" apart which just keeps the handle bars from hitting. I was able to put up 9 hooks across the back wall. There is a area in one corner of the garage where I could not put hooks because I have a stove there.I considered putting the hooks closer together and alternating the bikes by hanging one by the front wheel and the next by the back, but the handlebars become a hazard when the bike is hung by the rear wheel.I have now looked and measured and discovered that I could put hooks 12" apart if I loosen the stem bolt and turn the bars 90 degrees and remove the pedals, reducing most bikes to only 10" in width. Actually , I would reinstall the pedals into the opposite side of the crank arm so they wouldn't get lost and could stay with the "right" bike. Most of my bikes are three speed or ten speeds so I might have a problem with brake and shift cables on some of them. The bikes that I would hang are ones that I don't ride weekly or even monthly , but would ride occasionally. The 5 or 6 that I do ride often still sit on the garage floor. Others that I have that are not presently "rideable" are stored in a barn at my inlaws.Opinions , please. Thanks.

I have 3 bikes hanging right now. I would have more but I am unsure of the integrety of the rafters in my garage. The three hooks I have up are 14" apart. I hang all three bikes by the front wheels, but the one in the middle is turned in the opposite direction of the two outside bikes. So if you stand facing the bikes you see the tops of the two outside bikes and the bottom of the middle one. Doing this keeps the handle bars out of each others way.

Someone posted a bike hanging rack here. The hook spacings were 10-1/8" apart. Turning the handle bars are fine if you don't repete it all the time. At some point there could be wear on the inside of the forks. My no-rides are stored flat with bars turned and pedals off and hanging from the bike on strings.
