Sitting here wondering what the coil spring unit is there on your chainstays, looked closely and realized its a little metal artwork doggy, almost a daschund! Cute!

I'm a big fan of boiled linseed oil too. I've seen it mixed with a little clear lacquer as well.
Here's my before/after.
WD40 and 0000 steel wool (I 'may' have used a wire brush on the really crusty bits).

Really like the look of the fat franks the color fits this bike perfect. This bike has a great look . Then slap the nexus on it and you really got something pretty cool . I would like to see you convert it to a stick shift though.

This is perfect! I LOVE the original finish!

I would definitely recommend rubbing some BL oil on it. Put on a light coat, buff it in and repeat after it drys until you get the look that you want.

We've had lots of rain here so the build has been on hold. May have a dry day tomorrow. I've also been trying to get a ride in daily of at least 10 miles. 44 consecutive days and counting, some have been shorter. 13.01 miles today.
I've obtained a couple more pieces to the puzzle, some Thompson Grips and a Klaxon horn. Hopefully I'll get back to doing some wheel work and experiment with the BLO soon.

River flood warning out today. We live in an elevated area but we have a creek that runs through our backyard when it rains a few inches. With the dogs it is a nuisance.
I spent a few hours this am cleaning parts. The rear wheel actually shows some paint after removing incrusted grease and dirt. The spokes need some tension hopefully the nipples will move. Some of the spokes have some shine after getting the crud off. Also cleaned up the bottom bracket parts and the crankset.

I went over the fenders one more time with SW and WD-40. The front fender had a couple of dents that I managed to massage out at about 95%. I then proceeded to give them a coat of boiled linseed oil. Buff on buff off. Hopefully when dry they look as good as they do now.

I gave the frame and fork a second treatment of SW and WD-40. Wiped it down and applied a coat of boiled linseed oil, buff on buff off, leaving a semi gloss look. I was working outside with dogs harassing each other. I was wearing protective gloves and it was like they knew I wasn't going to stop to come and correct them.

The oil does pop the remaining paint and darkens the bare metal rust. A moment saved in time. Still amazed at what I started with.

A little oil goes a long way.
I used it on relevent setback last year, and she still looks good. In fact, I haven't even cleaned the road dust off.

I've never had a complete old bike quite like this original one. My previous bikes and frames were either completely rusted or have been repainted once or twice. This old Hawthorne keeps surprising me.

I've been constantly surprised at what was hidden under the dirt, grease, rust and dust. Thanks to those who share their BLO experience. It's refreshing to not be contemplating a new paint scheme for BO12.

I wiped down the frame and fork again, seemed to be little oil residue. Then I greased the headset bearings which seemed to be in good shape with none missing and installed the fork. Rotation seems smooth with no play.
In order to move it around a bit easier I put an old wheel set on it temporarily. It's now a roller...I have it's Hawthorne wheels cleaned although they need the hubs re-packed. Hopefully the spoke nipples will cooperate and allow some tensioning to happen.
