Lets face it its cheaper the building a car but still uses all the same skill set!

Am I reading this right ?
Are you saying that it takes the same amount of Skill to assemble/repair a Bicycle as it does to assemble/repair a Car !

Please note I did not use the word "BUILD"

Im burnt out on working on cars. I have everything to finish my bug, and just cant muster the effort.

I agree, after 20 years of cars and motorcycles I am burnt on anything with a motor. Bikes are simple and clean. Satisfaction of riding your new build is days instead of 9 months or a year and a half.

...So how do you guys weigh in do you buy already built bikes or just build your own? ... right now im torn i really dont want to end up with a collection that i didnt build. and the other hand tells me its still better than buying a felt or something that everyone has :| :?

I am a little confused myself. I am half "collector" and half tinkerer. I tend to buy vintage bikes that have something wrong with them, "damaged goods" in other words - just so I can put them right. A pure collector knows and will tell you that this is not economical. I can promise you that I lose 20% to 40% on every bike I sell. I justify this as the cost of my entertainment.

I ride 5-6 days a week, that leaves little time for riding the vintage bikes.

:| You're doin' it wrong.

I ride 3000 miles a year on a 1938 Schwinn. My wife does the same on a 1951 Schwinn. Is there something wrong with your vintage bikes? :?

  Yeah, I guess they are broken. As hard as I have tried, I can't maintain 22mph in a time trial on my Huffman Tanker and my single speed '46 Schwinn doesn't haul 35lbs of gear up and down the mountains very well while touring.

Although I did chase down some guys on road bikes on my Hot Rod Higgins. Got it up over 20mph!

" A Pure Collector knows" that statement makes me Laugh.
Please dont take this as though I am picking on you Dougfisk

I go to a lot of car shows. Many of the people who show the cars buy them and have No Idea of anything about their cars.

For example: I walked up to a couple sitting with a beautiful 67 Pontiac with a bunch of display paperwork and a few trophies in front of it, at a show.

I was admiring it and I asked a question about the engine. His response was " I dont know". I thought the car was Beautiful, I continued to walk around the rear of the car and asked. WOW how did you get this bumper to match so well. It is such a perfect match, even the bolts match. His response was "I dont know I just bought the car this way. I bought if from a guy last month and bring it to Car shows.

Wow

I dont understand! Maybe they thought if they bought it, they would be cool.

You can buy an item, But you cant buy a hobby or knowledge about it.

I've met people like that, and it doesn't bother me. I mean they saw a car they liked, they wanted to get into the car collector hobby and they had the means to buy a nice car. We all have to start somewhere, so maybe in 10 years that couple will be seriously into it and know everything there is to know about the hobby. The cool thing is that they appreciate the beauty and value of the car and like to share it with others.

No I am not saying it takes the same amount of skill. I am saying you use the same skills like- welding, painting, fab. work. I know there is alot more to restoring a car.
