just paint the hub too, its hard not too if your painting the rim and spokes.. :roll: and great job on the hub lube !!

thanks...and i know it's no big deal to you guys but i was a little intimidated, i thought i would open it up and greasy brake pads were gonna come flying out and i'd never get it back together again!! when it all worked I was psyched enough to post the pix here! i had the camera in case i found anything crazy inside and needed the reference photos!
 
...Its great that you found that it was wet/greasy...not dry with a bunch of metal shavings :mrgreen: hope you packed it well with a lot of grease, especially the bearings :D great job on your first hub.
 
Well I globbed more on the bearings but how would you define packing it with grease? I think I tried to put some on every part then extra on the bearings. Easy enough to open it up and add more so let me know what you think!
 
with caged bearings you want to force the grease through the cage and out the other side so that the cage gets "packed" with grease
 
Sweet, glad to see you got it tackled. Lucky it was caged bearings and not loose bearings, I hate those with a passion and convert them whenever I can. My Hercules had loose bearings in both the crank and headset. Have yet to look into the wheels........That's next weekend's project, this weekend is getting my shed in order. It looks like a bicycle Woodstock in there. :oops: :mrgreen:

Hey send me the caged bearings and I'll send you all the little ball bearings....lol. I just hate taking them apart and bearings scatter everywhere.

I like the cages, keeps everything organized and easier to just throw a ring over the fork and install them than to sit each and every little bearing into place. What is the advantage of loose bearings over caged if any? Is there a difference?

Without the cages you can spread the load over a few more bearings. Personally, I leave the cages when they have them, it's just a little easier to deal with.

Cool I've never worn out a set of bearings with cages so I don't think I'll have a problem. And I've come home with 3 bikes straddling the handlebars.
