Copperstone Coaster

Some time ago, picked up this mid-seventies Bridgestone Super Speed at a thrift shop. Suggestions as what to turn it into were given and I liked the idea of a coaster. Here are the after pics.

It is a 27" with a Bendix coaster hub. Antique copper paint, new tires, seat and custom handle bars fabricated from copper pipe. It is a blast to ride and I am considering selling it at the swap meet at Peddler's in Independence, on Oct. 2nd, and use the funds to purchase a new bike carrier at Peddler's. Hope to see some local RatRodders there.

Thanks, Fatboy. Got my eye on a MIG welder at Harbor Freight. Going to step up to the next level of chopping and welding.

I like what you did with it. It looks older and more classy.

I bought a harbor freight arc that was horrible. I then bought a craftsman flux core mig and constantly surprise people with the welds that come out of it. When I'm having a good day the welds look like gas mig welds. If I'm not in the groove, I get some splatter , but not too bad and the welds are strong. I was even able to make a water tight coolant resevoir for a car with it.

Anyway, that bike looks 100 times better now that you have had your way with it. Looks great.

Thanks, Bikebuilder. Have a gas welder that was my dads, I can do a sloppy looking braze job, welding with it, I just cannot get the hang of it. That is why I am going to try the MIG welder. Good tip on bypassing the cheap welder and getting a more expensive unit. Always appreciate advice from someone who has been there.

That thing is awsome! color reminds me of the stogie in your avita.....Cigar band or art headbadge or seat tube decal ?

I am feeling the overwhelming need to point out that is not a "fixie". You have a coaster brake hub there not a fixed gear hub. HOWEVER! it still is a rocking bike, good job.

Fixie.. As in fixed gear (aka single speed.) At least that is always what I have heard that term in reference to.

You are welcome. I almost didn't post about the welder because I haven't tried a harbor freight mig and I didn't want your post to end up being a welder discussion. My experience with the arc was bad compared to other arc welders. I am happy with my choice. The craftsman mig is only about $50 more than the harbor freight mig. $50 bucks is $50 bucks, but it may save you money in the long run if the H.F. welder doesn't work out. I tried out two other migs identical to mine before I bought it. They all seemed to be a consistant good quality.

I agree with moleman's definition.

Fixed gear = The gear is fixed to the hub. No coasting.
Single speed = The gear is a separate functioning part of the hub. Has the ability to coast.

Oops, fixed the header for this, now a coaster. Got it in gear now.
