I was going thru an old bike and the harware was beat up and rusty. I didnt have evaporust, my normal deruster. Looking around the garage I decided to give driveway cleaner a try.
Menards puts this on high discount a couple times a year. It's actually a strong base sodium meta silicate. So wear gloves.
Here's a brake assy before and after. Disassembly, 1 minute dip, brass brush, quick coat of wax. The rust inside the allen recess was killed, so I just brushed some silver paint inside the hole.
Aluminum- cleans well dip and scotchbrite.
Chrome- kills the rust and does not damage the chrome.
Plastic -no effect on the parts I used it on didn't hurt the silkscreen printing on plastic.
Paint- didnt hurt the paint on my frame, looks like powder coat, not sure how it will react with enamel, urethane, lacquer.
Anodized- Haven't tested
After cleaning, I dip in water and baking soda mix to neutalize, rinse with water, polish, buff, wax from there.
I've done my derailleurs, brakes, derusted some scrapes on the frame.
Give it a try, WEAR GLOVES AND SAFETY GLASSES. Quick acting cheap cleaner I had good results with, wanted to share.
