Hello Ace,

Netherlands haven't been there, maybe one day.

Cheers.
Were lucky living in the north of England you can get a ferry just 20 miles from where we live to IJmuiden [Amsterdam] from £60 for a day trip [with two nights on the ferry!] up to about £200 with our vw camper for a weeks touring. We have made the trip over 8 or 9 times for the VW Euro Show and just quite weekends, we love it but the poor Pound [£] against the Euro has spoilt any plans for this year!
Boris.

Hi Bill,
The temp got down to 21f last week but we been up to the mid 40s since set to change tonight tho! Wind cold and snow! hey!

As last weekend was the first with decent weather (10C windforce 2) we went and took the bikes to Texel, which is the first island north from our part of the Netherlands:

Have to admit, although it is not even an hours drive and 20 mins by boat, I had never been there before  Travelled the world but forgot about my own country  it's worth the trip though !

We parked the car up north where we stayed the night, and got the bikes out to cycle around the island - yes they do fit easily inside our Voyager, love that car 8)

Anyways, the rest is 35 kms later and history as they say, wonderfull day out in nature, but today it's windforce 8 and stormin' again and back to work

Because I enjoy everybody elses 'hoodpics a lot, I went out for a ride today and shot some more pics for your sunday-entertainment.
In between the last stretch of road to the piers/beach and the Steelplant, there is a small strip of land that's been given the name Zee van Staal (Sea of Steel). It is in use by some independent artists to give their point of view on steel. Hence I went there on my aluminum Ghostrider  Great thing is, while you walk around, all forms and shapes keep changing. Nice weather too !

Here are the pics, in no particular order:

Took the bikes for a spin to the beach this weekend with some friends, and got loads of smiles along the way  that must be the best side-effect of bikes like this, they seem to make people happy 8)

...And here is the Corus steel works near my hometown in England! .....

STA70455.jpg

Crazy! almost the same site! Used to be ''British Steel'' fired from coke made from british coal...those days are gone lol! All my 'lot' where coal miners...none left now :(...loveing Hawkwind here also!!!!!

:( Well it gets sadder......... Corus Steel works are finnished up here as well now :( The doors will close for ever before christmas...Thats another town hit the dust how will they ever recover?......

Boris, I hate to hear that. Hope it's not your job about to be lost? The government here is entering phase two of the cleanup of the old mill site. They are going to tear down the old electrical power plant and remove slag piles that have been built up over decades. The slag piles alone are estimated to involve more than 100,000 truckloads. Most of that can be recycled into concrete and asphalt for roads. The steel removed from the power plant is going to China. Hang in there guys! Thanks!!!

Hi Cashman, no i dont work there but the knock on effect is massive! I am a paintsprayer at a ford dealership and there are 2000 plus people who arnt thinking of renewing there cars in the near future!
Interesting about over your way they are recycling the slag, here they just landscapped over the top of the spoil heaps leaving some crazy hills! :D

Cheers Ace,
I think its a signed deal now, its rotten when a whole town depends on one employer... maybe one day the place will look nicer without it! Life goes on!

:( Doh! Soz to say Ace Friday is the last day that my county will produce steel after over one hundred and seventy years ......not sure of the tech terms but the lads say they are ''tapping the Salimander'' ...and thats it ..................gone.....................forever...... :(

The salimander tap is just another name for the final steel to come out, after which the construction can cool down. Not sure where the name came from, but it probably has something to do with the shape of that final bit of fluid steel as it somes to a halt, I can imagine is sort of snakes it's way down.

Very sorry to hear an era has come to an end... ...makes you wonder what's next ?

Those pics are neat Ace! Maybe do a night shot just as they tap the furnace. I did some shots once using a one minuit exposure setting on a Nikon F series 35mm and I thought some of the shots turned out decent.

Ace, I did my first shots about 600m away from the furnaces. I was far enough away from the glare that the lighting kinda soaked in to the pic. What was cool was you could trace the paths of all the headlights on the locomotives moving about the plant. Later on I did some more shots at about 1000m trying to get the blast reflection in some low hanging clouds but never got the clouds to cooperate. What worked best if I remember right was using ISO 400 speed 35mm at about 1 min exposure and the light meter on the camera set manually wide open at about 22.
