He says it's from the 50's but it has looped rear dropouts. Didn't think they made those 'til later. He has a 54 bike license plate and I think that is how he is aging it. So is it truly a 54 and is it worth the price. I live about 10 miles away.

Not really later. The Colson Clipper was made PreWar as well.

It is truly no later than 54, possibly as early as 49 or so. Rims are unknown and do not match. No rear fender, no chainguard, no truss rods. Headbage has been "folded, spindled and mutilated". Pedals are repro. Rack is obviously non-original.

On the plus side - you are getting the best looking baloon frame ever, with appropriate servicable fork, crankset, and stem... and the seat is age-appropriate.

As far as value only you can aswer that... what are your hopes and aspirations for it?

And don't say "find a tank"... :lol:

Thanks. It was the price that struck my interest. But it would not be worth the effort. And I just wasn't sure if it truly was that old. I thought looped dropouts didn't come out 'til around the 70's on BMX bikes. But I was wrong.

Colson did it in 1940, and someone else may have done it previously, in cyclings golden age 1890 to 1910 or so! :shock:

1936 Elgin Twin 60. As Doug said there may be earlier examples of loop frames.

Here's an example of an even earlier loop frame. An 1894 Spalding that just showed up on the CABE.
