I too have been looking into the glue on cyclocross tires for my current project.
What I have found out is that any of the high-end cyclocross 700 tires are the same height as our old 28" wood clad wheels. Width is the problem. So far, 34mm is the widest I had seen which is still skinnier than the original 1 1/2" size. The other problem is, they are usually VERY aggressive tread patterns.
These tires that were used here look like they fit well (35mm according to the link) and the tread is not too over the top. Might be a very good solution. They are still about half of what the repop SIngletubes sell for.
