Recently, I posted a Trek 820 MTB on CL.
Lady showed up when she said she would, but it was after dark.
She was buying for her son, and had all kinds of questions considering the excellent price I was asking.

She didn't feel safe test riding in the dark, so she spotted my Park work stand and asked me to hang it for her.
I did and she ran it thru all the gears, brakes, etc. (which I had done before I listed it).

Everything checked out, and since it was already up in the air, I put an extra shot of Rock n Roll on the chain for her.

Usually my buyers just ride around the block.
First time for everything, I guess. ;)

I have had people look at a rider, and say, "I will take it."
And never test ride it, usually I noticed they never come back for a tune up.
I chalk those sales up as, great customer, knew what they wanted, great sale, no after the fact work, and, hope your word of mouth travels with you!

I was one of those people recently when I bought this one.

No test ride necessary.:)

I myself have never test ridden a bike that I've discovered in the wild , or a Craigslist find.
To me half the fun is the hunt and making a rusty heap rideable once again o_O.

Of all the bikes that I have sold or traded though ,only 1 person test rode. She was a pretty cool chick. I think the only reason she test rode it was cuz she couldn't wait til she got home to ride a Stingray

Every bike I sold this summer the buyers test rode first. Which I appreciated because it proved that I was a stand up guy that was selling them what they needed; a bike they could ride when they got home. I say this because I scan craigslist for bikes to flip and see a lot of roached out pre 80's bikes listed waayyyy to high! They think if its a 20+ year old basket case its automatically worth $100!!!
If a buyer pays a high price knowing what it takes to make a bike a rider again so be it. But everyone I sold to this summer had no idea that a new seat, tires, tubes, cables and a servicing could be $130 alone! I think they can understand that but then realize they got taken advantage of on the bikes price.

Don't get me wrong, if we're flipping bikes we need to make money to fund more projects. But there are some people out there (not a part of this community I'm sure) that are gouging newbies pretty bad. I think this drives alot of people to buy the box store P.O.S's. Am I alone on this guys?

I feel that. I personally like to take it for a spin when I have the time and room, for my Flying-O, I knew the picture from CL like the first nudie I ever saw.. just..PLASTERED in my mind. When I came up to his SUV and watched him pull it out of the back.. in exactly the condition shown.. I shook his hand after handing him the money and rode it all the way home.. no concerns.

Sorry to steal ur thread but quick question what color of rock and roll lube are u using and how do u like it? I have been using finish line dry lube and thinking about something else

LBS told me that the Blue R&R is for bikes that will encounter wet conditions. Gold is for likely dry riding. I have and use both without much thought about it.
