Almost all of your load is vertical at that point, even when turning, you lean into the turn meaning the weight and forces are still up and down on the frame, so passing it through should be fine in theory? :39:

I can't see it being any weaker. If anything it would be stronger depending on the gauge steel used.
Not trying to push the idea, but I wouldn't be concerned about strength.

A tensioner pulley would also resolve issue, but obviously you will need to lengthen the chain. Something else to consider! Think think think!
