What about a nylon tube, cut then slid over the stay. Chain could glide on that...quiet, no friction.

It hits pretty bad and thats a skip chain so way old chain draging along

I can't see it being any weaker. If anything it would be stronger depending on the gauge steel used.
Not trying to push the idea, but I wouldn't be concerned about strength.

A tensioner pulley would also resolve issue, but obviously you will need to lengthen the chain. Something else to consider! Think think think!

i was so worried to do it because all i could think was when i cut it the frame shifting a ton. It didnt budge only the chain loosened some. So happy thank you for your ideas now time to clean and blend it somewhat
