It hits pretty bad and thats a skip chain so way old chain draging alongWhat about a nylon tube, cut then slid over the stay. Chain could glide on that...quiet, no friction.

I can't see it being any weaker. If anything it would be stronger depending on the gauge steel used.In theory i see what you mean
