Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Eating under the Rain

Thanks Jerry, Nick, Luke and Kingfish!
The way FIL talks about roaring through small towns with his Harley in the old days,
I think he like the Bad Boy image (even though it was accidental)

Skipton, I sure am glad we're riding again too
I can't really take it for granted that he could ride again this year so I'm very happy!

Short outing last Sunday (19May), It was pouring down rain intermittently all day
So we went to Wendy's for burger, fries and shake

Wore or jackets and hats but took them off because of no rain at the moment
Ordered or food and sat in the all-glass seating and it started to pour again!

FIL said the old one "That's a lot of food, can I cut in half?"
I know the trick now (as he was reaching for the fries when he said it )
Told him he was able to his whole burger every time we went
He just moaned a bit (like a little kid) and proceeded to eat the whole thing

Wanted to go over to the bike shop to look for a fork but no parking for about a block
And I didn't want to get FIL soaked, even with his coat on (local flooding that day)
So we headed home and I promised that we would try to get out Memorial Day weekend for a DQ and ride

We both enjoyed or meal and look forward to our next ride
Thanks for looking
Steve

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Eating under the Rain

I saw on tv you can get a Frosty in a waffle cone now. You guys didn't try that?

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Eating under the Rain

stay dry, keep posting pictures, I'll keep watching. :D :D

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Eating under the Rain

Always enjoy these updates. Your details always make me laugh for some reason.

Glad you decided to journal about it here ;)

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Quick&Chilly DQ ride

Hey IIFIFM, I saw that too and they looked good
I showed FIL the ads plastered all over the Wendy's and asked if he wanted one
He hemmed and hawwed, then I asked if he just wanted his usual and he jumped at that

Thanks Jerry! We'll try to stay dry but just heard we got ~6" on rain in May so less riding

Thanks a bunch Steve! I'm really glad I can get a laugh out of you. :D
I appreciate such a great format You created for me to share the story!

Last Sunday (26May) was no different than the rest of the month with rain off and on, cloudy, and chilly
So we left a little earlier in the afternoon during a small window of dryness
Decided to make it a quick run to DQ and then head back home before it rained again

FIL was in a really good mood. I can't believe I got a shot of him looking at me and smiling (kinda) while riding
Usually he is rather focused while riding so it was good to see him more relaxed

We laughed that there wouldn't be too long of a line on a day like this
I'm glad I brought my work gloves for FIL, He bawked a bit then, put them on
My hands were a bit cold too so he won't have been as comfortable (or stylish  )

No line at DQ and I got brain freeze from mine :?
FIL decided to ham it up

Pushed against a wind home and glad we were both hyped up on sugar for the ride home
No hanging out in the back yard this time

The weather is supposed to be really nice this coming Sunday and we can go hit the trail again after DQ
We made the best of our chilly ride and enjoyed getting out

Thanks for looking
Steve

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Quick&Chilly DQ ride

It is ridiculous how much this makes me smile, thanks for sharing.

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Quick&Chilly DQ ride

raining off and on here too between the violent storms :( Just part of weather around here.

likin' the photos.

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Quick&Chilly DQ ride

FIL looks happier and happier as these posts progressed. You've been a real blessing to him. You are an inspiration to me, as I'm sure he is one to you.

FIL updates are always fun

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Quick&Chilly DQ ride

FoF (Fans of FIL) approves of these last few trips!

It's been 90 here the last couple days... not that that matters. haha

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Quick&Chilly DQ ride

Hi Steve, I'm a pretty new member to the forum at RRB and I found your thread from an FB post the website put out last week. Took me a few days but I've finally reached the most recent post.

I'm sitting in a local hotdog place for lunch as i read and when I got to the part about your MIL passing I was so saddened by the news I sat here with tears in my eyes. My deepest sympathy and condolences to you and yours.

Thank you so much for the updates and pics. I've really enjoyed reading your thread. Looking forward to seeing news of more safe and successful rides to the DQ.

Rob

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: DQ and The Bridge

Hey Sloan, FIL loves to make people laugh, so perfect :D You too Kingfish!
Thanks Randy! It's cool for someone else to point out something you don't see
The reds kinda frame it don't they, just lucky
If you knew all the times I've held my camera above my head
and had people look oddly at me, you'd laugh (and understand  )

Misery love company Jerry so thanks
IIFIFM, Thank you, Yes, FIL inspires me to know I could still ride when they take my car away

Youthgeye, that sounds like actual summer :D
instead of this cold and dreary junk we got this summer
Glad we meet your approval
Was thinking I might make a Fans Of FIL t shirt for FIL's 81st Bday this year
Put all the avatars from you guys on it with a "Fans OF FIL" banner

Thank You SpokeAndTruth, we appreciate your condolences
I'm sure going to try and keep the rides safe and successful for sure

Thank You Steve (Mr RRB) for featuring FIL's thread on RRB's Facebook page
And Thanks Everybody for the over 8000 hits (plus my own probably 2000 views  )

So last Sunday (1Jun), it was slightly warmer and kinda sunny :D
FIL seemed excited to got to DQ but then seemed a bit down and quiet
We all have good and not so good days and this was his turn
IMG_0591.jpg

I think the DQ helped a bit and he was willing to go for a further ride
IMG_0593.jpg

He put on a brave face for this picture as we went to the bridge
Look at all the bikes at Longfellow Grill (great food)
they purposely have a big bike rack for customers :D
http://www.longfellowgrill.com/
IMG_0596.jpg

I took him up to Lake Street bridge like we had last year
(he didn't remember and that's okay)
The view was great but he still wasn't the jolly joker like the week before
IMG_0597.jpg

We headed back down to the river road path and finished up our 5 mile ride
Tried to see if I could find out what was bothering him but couldn't
Sometimes people just don't want to talk about things and that's okay too

He was fine later in the week and if the rain holds off tomorrow, we'll have another round

Thanks for Looking
Steve

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: DQ and The Bridge

Your birthday t-shirt idea sounds like it would be a cool present for FIL. My father-in-law turned 89, but uses a walker and road a stationary bike during some rehab for a fall he took last November. Great to see you are trying to keep him active.

Sign me up for one of those!!!!
It would have to have a pic of one of FIL's hamming it up expressions and one of him on the bike too.

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: DQ and The Bridge

I hope when I get there, one of my boys takes me out for a ride, DQ would just be fine, so fine! You rock Steve, hats off to you!
