I delivered the 1976 Mossberg BMX today (paid $40 sold for $350 without even wiping it off). On the way back, I stopped off at the Harley dealer and loaded up a few different tires. They had them by their dumpster and told me to take whatever I wanted. I even got a fat whitewall. Some of these might not work, but for free it's worth a try. Photos and sizes to follow.

Since you have a spare rim, you do all the sizing for me, when you find something I like, then I'll actually do something. haha

That's a deal. Kinda sounds like how I came about attempting to build Fugsley off of your Sand Rover work.

Does anyone know the actual rim dimensions of a 24" rim?

All of these tires are Harley Davidson Dunlops except one is a Metzeler.

One of the tires that I got was a MH 90-21 54H and it's dimensions are:
Inside Diameter = 21"
Outside Diameter = 27"
Outside Width (bead to bead) = 2 1/4"
Outsude Width = 3 3/8"

Here is the tire. It would be cool if this would fit on a 24 rim.

Re: Folding Pugsley = Fugsley - MO FATTA Motorcycle Tires

Whitewall, all the way! If it fits of course. the chain clearance would be an even bigger issue, i fear. Great selection of tires though. you could build a fleet of fat-tired stingrays...
I hope the front fits as well. it would look great. im debating on switching out the stock 24" for a 26". I'm wanting to make BoB look bigger all over.

Re: Folding Pugsley = Fugsley - MO FATTA Motorcycle Tires

The inside width of the OCC backend is 5" between the brakes and 6.5" between the frame.
The only way to use the 150s or the 180 whitewall woul dbe to cut and widen the rear end, but that is just making it fit in the frame.
The chain still has to make it around the tire. I will have to wait and take some OCC wheel measurements.

Looks like it might be the 90s which have a rounded profile than the others.

That Metzeler looks almost new. It might be able to squeeze the standalone chopper frame.

Josh, can you take some similar measurements of your spare 130 tire?

Re: Folding Pugsley = Fugsley - MO FATTA Motorcycle Tires

sure. michelin hi-tour 130/90-16
outside diameter= 24 1/4
inside diameter= 16"
widith(bead to bead= 2 3/4"
outside width= 5 3/8
I hope that helps. i will tell you you'll probably want to use metal tire spoons. i broke 2 of the plastic ones i had.

Re: Folding Pugsley = Fugsley - Motorcycle Tires

Does anyone know the actual rim dimensions of a 24" rim?

Well according to Sheldon Brown, the bead seat diameter of 24"x decimal (1.5-2.125-etc.) is 507mm.
There are other sizes of 24" wheels, but I don't think they apply here.

Re: Folding Pugsley = Fugsley - MO FATTA Motorcycle Tires

Alright, the price of rubber went up this year and talking to a guy in a bike shop in Myrtle Beach, all his tires went up... BIKE TIRES!!! We should be exempt. Anyway, if we can decode standard and schwinn rim sizes and apply them to motorcycle tires, we can start something using used motorcycle tires. Even mine that is slick will NEVER be worn down if I mounted it on a bike.

We are entering a new dimension.

That is what I was thinking as I drove back to the office with the free used tires in the back.

Bad news. The taller skinnier mc tire has too big of an inside diameter for a 24 rim. A 24 rim was about 20" and the MC tire was 21.

Does anyone have a bare 24" rim that they can take some measurements off of?

Maybe from that we can figure out what used MC tire size would work on it.

Stay tuned for some great wheel mounting tips and for the BEASTIEST folding bike you have ever seen. Photos soon.

Re: Folding Pugsley = Fugsley - MO FATTA Motorcycle Tires

I just don't think even teh smaller 150 Metzeler tire will work. Here it is mocked in the frame. It is 5.75" wide.
The OCC rear end is 6.75 wide and the tire side of the chain is about 3/4 to 1 inch from the inside fo the frame.
The tire would fin in the frame (with some squeezing past the brakes, but the chain would never clear unless the cog could be moved out more on the axle. And then you may have the problem of the chain angle be wrong and the chain coming off.

Here are the photos for reference.

Re: Folding Pugsley = Fugsley - MO FATTA Tire Mounting Rig

So I moved on with the Dunlop D402F MT 90B16 72H tires. I have a pair of these. The have a rounder crown than the other tires I picked up.
Their OD is 25" and the OW is 5".

I lubed the inner rim of the tire with some spray white grease. Popping one side on was pretty simple. Then I put the tube in and it was a MAJOR pain getting the valve into the rim hole. One thing that did help some with alignment was to remove the vale stem and use a nail punch pushed through the hole and into the stem. Then I used my skinniest needlenose pliers to push the stem through the hole.

After trying to manhandle the tire, I knew I need some way to keep it still and something to raise the rim up off of the work surface higher than the tire bottom. Here is what I came up with. Two blocks of wood under the rim and a work clamp holding the rim down to the table. Man, once I did this I didn't even need any tools to get the tire on. I just pushed my weight down an inch or so at a time until the whell popped right on. It took less than 2-3 minutes.

Re: Folding Pugsley = Fugsley - MO FATTA Motorcycle Tires

Here is the finished product on one rim with a OCC tire in comparison.
The OCC tire is 21.5" tall. The HD tire is 25.25" tall. This is going to raise the bike almost 4 inches! Wait till you see the mockup.
I really should have taken a photo that also included the original 16" Dahon tire and rim.

Re: Folding Pugsley = Fugsley - MO FATTA Motorcycle Tires MOCKUP

Once I had the tire mounted, I had to see the whole bike mocked up again. The jump from the OCC to the HD is is just as much a jump in scale as it was to jump from the Dahon 16 to the OCC. There is 16" of clearance from the ground to the bottom of the frame. The center of the crank will be 20" off the ground. I am going to have to add a penny farthing foot peg just to get up on this beast! :p Good thing that it folds up for easy carrying!! 8)

So far it looks like 130s or lower can work. The 150s are just too wide. Keep an eye on what Josh is doing with BoB.

Common misconception, coming from a 4x4 building background, when you install bigger tires, you take the new height and divide it because half of the new height will be under the axle, half will be on top. So your almost 4 inches of added height actually turns into almost 2" of added height, but you still get to see all of the awesome tire.

If we can conclude that 16" motorcycle tires fit this rim, I might go looking for dirtbike tires!

Very true. I also think my mock up is is a bit higher than it will be once welding occurs. It is still high though.

No question that a 16" tire fits this rim. There are at least 4 examples on this site now that have them. You will need the tube though to push the bead to the rim.
There is a Kawasaki dealer down the street from work. I may take a look at what they have, but I am liking these HD Dunlops.

For a 24 inch bike rim, I think we need to try some motorcycle 19s. The MC 21 that I have is too big.

Re: Folding Pugsley = Fugsley - MO FATTA Motorcycle Tires MOCKUP

Could you use the OCC tube on a 120/80/16? It's about 1/2 inch wider than the OCC tire. Or is the mtorcycle tire just too heavy for it?

This idea really 'intrigues' me, I can't remember if the 20" OCC uses an offset rear sprocket (I don't think so) but that may solve some of the chain clearance issues. I'll have to check out my 'parts mules' when I get home, I know the 16" 'baby Sting Ray" uses one, maybe I'll swap them out.

Also, how hard is it to get a tire shop to give away used tires, it just saves them disposal fees, right?

Cheers,
Dr. T
