I'm going to look at a Stingray, but someone swears it's an AMF. Is there a source for serial numbers that would give me a clue what I'm looking at, and where it is.

If it is a Schwinn the serial will be on the left rear dropout. Also the frame will be smoothly braised NOT welded. Another dead giveaway is all old Schwinn bikes had a barrol kickstand welded to the frame, while cheaper bikes had a bolt on style. Hope that helps.
Schwinn numbers were also below the headbadge on 71 and newer. The bike you are looking at is an AMF with a schwinn seat, badge, and possibly crank/sprocket and bars. Parts probably came off a Schwinn Scrambler. The dropouts are a dead giveaway that it's an AMF
