Sorry to hear about your friends bad luck Hooch. Glad to hear he'll be alright. My sister is still alive and well today thanks to her helmet. I've always been an advocate for wearing one. I don't see why anyone wouldn't. A good helmet properly adjusted is hardly noticeable. And with all the different styles available you'll always "fit in" with your what your riding. Not only do I like being a role model to my friends and children. I like being a role model to all those who see me while I'm out riding. Cause with a bike as cool as mine (and all of us on here) people certainly look!

Here are a couple of other cool looking alternatives....

I really like the Bern helmets....they have a vintage motorcycle look to them, Especially if you wear vintage style goggles with it

I think it's funny how some folks seem to look fine with helmets on and others seem to look goofy.

I'm not sure if it's the shape of the head or what the deal is.

I know when I put one on and look at myself I seem to fall onto the goofy side...

Maybe it's just the way we see ourselves with helmets on.

from what i've heard it's the law that kids(under 16 maybe) must wear a helmet riding a bike. not sure i agree w/ that, but the law is the law.
i dont recall wearing a helmet when my dad took off my training wheels back in the 70s. come to think of it did i have training wheels?
i think my dad just put me on a bike and held the back of the seat and said "go man".
to the point...helmet shmemet...when i was younger and a skateboarder(still am) i knew when to wear a helmet and not to.
on my motorcycle i dont have a choice. if i did i wouldnt wear one around town in neighborhoods w/ a 25 mph spd limit. highway or interstates heck yeah.
when it comes to bicycles if i was a serious roadie or off road or BMX park i prolly would wear a dome piece, but i dont see me doin' any of that stuff anytime soon.

I wouldn`t be posting this if it weren`t for helmets. 3 times now, helmets have given their little foam lives for me, and I am eternally grateful. :D

Todd always said the same thing they look goofy and are uncomfortable
but this scar will probably look goofy for a long time, and this was a Saturday evening leisure ride with his wife on a paved trail!

I realize it was an accident and who knows how much a helmet would have helped but like I said now I totally rethink helmet use.
the pictures before he was stitched up were really bad. that whole sewed up area was open skull ack.
today he told me after seeing his wife at his side 6 hours in the ER that he realized his choices effected other people way more than it effected him.

So, how did your buddy go down? Front wheel come flying off? Broom handle? Hard to imagine biting it on a paved trail.

looked back to his wife as the trail curved abit and hit the edge which was washed out and went face first into a boulder, he admits he screwed up looking back. but it was just a mistake with a horrible ending

Hey Hooch,
This thread shook me up a bit. the pic of your buddy sealed it. I went out and bought a "brain bucket" sort of a satin black, skateboard style Bell helmet. I don't look like as big a dork in it as I did the racing helmets I tried. It's gonna be a bit getting used to but my wife's been at my side in the ER a few times ,I don't need another one.

A friend of mine did the same thing but unfortunately wasn't so lucky; he was riding on the road but no other vehicles were involved, he just happened to hit the wrong bit of his head on the edge of the kerb and it killed him, it's really not worth the risk.

Like somebody else said, coming from BMX, then MTB, I feel weird swinging my leg over without a helmet on!

Really like the look of that Giro Surface in the link, might look into that when I've got the rat finished, I wear their Xen for MTB, great helmets but it is a bit 'sporty' looking.

Yes and yes.

Somewhere I read that if your helmet takes a hit for you, even one time, that it's toast, and you should buy a new one for the next accident. Does anyone know if that's true?

I dont wear a helmet.

Let those who ride...decide

Ive taken a coupla headers in my lifetime.

THANK GOD Im still OK

I've never been a fan of helmet laws. I've always thought that people should have the right to make a bad decision. Helmets themselves are another matter. I ride with one 98% of the time and ride super careful the other 2%. Working in a bike shop lets you hear all the stories, both good and bad, and I always tell people "I never had anyone come back and tell me "Thank God I wasn't wearing a helmet!"
