I RECENTLY BOUGHT A HIAWATHA FRAME FROM THE EARLY 40'S. I ATTEMPTED TO DO A MOCH UP AND TRIED TO MOUNT THE REAR TIRE. IT WOULD NOT GO ON. I BELIEVE THE AXLES MAY BE TO BIG. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE ACTUAL AXLE SIZE MIGHT BE FOR A BIKE LIKE THIS. ANY AND ALL HELP IS GOOD.

grab a file/grinder/dremel and grind the axle flat on 2 sides.

the flat area will allow you to mount the wheel in the drop outs while the untouched threads will still hold the nut tight.

its a common practice with alot of newer oversized axles and some of the older ones also.

Another option is to file the dropout opening. With an uncommon old frame, Icyuod2's method is probably better.
