hey everyone, my name is Bo well thats what everyone calls me at least. my real name is Brett but i prefer Bo, anyways im new to the forum. i have built 2 racecars, some modified daily drivers in the car scene. i have built 2 cafe racer motorcycles from the ground up basically from scratch..... starting with a frame only. i have modified old school goped gas powered standup scooters, iv modified 50cc and 150cc mopeds, but i kinda realized the other day when i was given a bicyclefrom a friend of mine.... i have never modified your regular bicycle. i have 2 brands of bikes i prefer and like because they were the only 2 brands i remember having and actually enjoying when i was a kid, witch are Mongoose, and Specialized. and i really have 2 projects i really want to do after researching different bike styles. one thing i want to do is take a hardtail mountain bike with front shocks and convert to single speed, put some street/road tires on the bike and some bmx handle bars and call it a "street jumper" or "Curb Hopper" instead of a dirt jumper. and i want to do the same exact thing with a full suspension bike for my wife because she likes a more softer comfortable ride but she really hates the gears and she really hates when the chain slips lol. but yeah i have no idea how to do either of those so thats why i need your help guys thank you!
 
Welcome to the forum! It's a really cool place to hang out. Sounds like you're going to be doing 26" BMX conversions on those bikes. There are kits out there that will allow you to convert to single speed using your existing wheels. You can use BMX stems to adapt the BMX bars to your forks. You might need longer brake cables but that should be about it I think. Have fun!

SS conversion on a full suspension requires a bit more doing since you have to deal with variable chain slack on many configurations

If the BB is beyond the pivot or before changes this drastically

Thank you everybody! And it’s kinda funny you say that because, well my favorite bike I ever had was a grey 1996 specialized hardrock with red frame stickers! And actually the bike I’m building right now is a specialized! I repainted the bike so you can’t really tell at the moment but ima order some new frame stickers soon. I’ll post pics of the bike a little later today. I got the new stem and some bmx handlebars on the bike! I deleted the gears and derailer already and resized the chain to fit without a tensioner but I still have the multi speed cassette and chain ring on the bike. I want to delete the front brakes all together and add a hydraulic rear brake setup, so I gotta get a new wheel with the 6 bolt holes for a brake rotor, and my frame already has the holes for a disc brake. The wheel I was looking at has an option to get a single speed flywheel preinstalled on the wheel but it’s an 11 tooth cog! What would a good chainring size be for mostly flat ground riding but an occasional steep hill will come about from time to time?
 
11 tooth? That's tiny! With a 24 tooth chain wheel puts it at 57 GI, which is just a bit lower than a normal one speed ratio, which is about a 64 GI. I'm figuring a 26 x 2.125 tire.
I would see if you could change out that 11 cog for a 16 or 18 tooth cog which would give you more options for a chain wheel.

lol the bike my friend gave me is a specialized! I already am basically done with the bike. I’ll post some pics tomarrow when it’s light outside. The only things I wanna still is the actual single speed conversion because right now I still have the 7 speed cassette and 3x chainrings in the front but I removed all the gears and resized the chain. It works but it’s not cutting it for me lol. I want some new flat pedals,

ok I can do that, if I go 18 tooth, what size chain ring will be good for what I need
Also idk if this matters or not but it’s a 4 bolt mount 96bcd

I run a lot of singlespeed and 34/18 is my preferred gearing
Does it have some decent speed and go up steep hills every now and then without killing you lol? Only reason I’m asking because i have to go up a big hill with at least a 25-35 percent incline just to get back to my house every day.

I ride blue and black mountain bike trails with 32 or 34/18 gearing all the time. Doesn’t mean you don’t have to stand and mash occasionally but that comes with the territory

The beauty is once you like your crank length and front gear you can just try different rear cogs cheaply too

I’ve got an assortment of rear cogs from 15 up to 24
 
The reason that your name ideas sounded familiar was because I had them on my shortlist before I settled on "RockRat" for my 94ish Hardrock

As far as gear ratio, my 2010 Hardrock, aka Monolith, is 32-13. I have to walk up the steep stuff, but I am much stronger on the other bikes thanks to it
