I really like this bike! Kinda wish mine had a chrome frame! (jealous). Are you guys having the 100+ temps we are having here? Kinda makes it hard to get motivated to do anything!

Thanks Pick! You shouldn't be jealous except that I didn't have wait to paint it
Your green will look great!

Not quite 100F like you guys. Only Mid 90s but dew point of almost 80. Sticky!
Yeah, just a bit of work this morning then a/c, ick.
I might take a ride to the beach yet though.

Geez, I wish ya had that bike here in San Antonio for our cruise so I would have an up close and personal introduction to her. Awesome work man!

Thanks, Man. Yeah, I wish I could do the big SALSA cruise with you guys and the 'Liner.
I was glad just to hang out with you guys a few weeks back though.
Still hot down there I think too.

Re: Hot Rod 'Liner Final version

Hey DesignIt,

Sorry I missed your post earlier.

I'm really enjoying reading about this build and the tweaking you are doing to get things just right. I laughed when I saw the line "...I know roadies gear down up hills." When I used to do MS150 rides on my single speed Dyno Roadster, I would draft behind roadies until I heard the first "click" of the derailleur then I would pull out and crank past them uphill. Part of it was self-preservation because if I let my cadence drop with a 45 lb bike, I would be dead meat at the top of the hill. I admit, I did keep a mental note of how many titanium and carbon fiber framesets I dispatched.

BTW, Minneapolis is a beautiful, fun city. I always enjoyed my visits there although I never had the opportunity to tour the city on a bike.

Thanks for compliments and story. I'm glad you like Mpls.

Diggin this bike! Go spaceliners! 8)

Thanks Man. Again, sorry to here about your Friend.

Well I finally got all my parts together last night.
This is the final version (not too different than before).
Now have the 45mm back in back with the 52/13 gear combo.
I had to make some more room for the 45 with the new gears so I "peened" the frame cross brace.
It worked out pretty good because it just collapsed the tube in the section that need room.
It's not pretty and it could probably use more but good to go for now.
With more room, I was able to pump the 45 up to 80 psi.
Hope it rolls easier.

Shined up the used aluminum bits (stem and chain ring)
Didn't have time to ride it last night so I'm going for a ride today.
I'm really pretty much done and waiting to get good sun for pics to put it in the "done" column.
In the mean time, here is one I snapped quick before my wife and me went to the Bicycle Film Festival last night.

IMG_3899.jpg

Looking at the pic I think I have to adjust the seat

So many things going on this weekend:
Mpls Aquatennial
More Bicycle Film Festival
Art Car and Bike Parade around Lake Harriet
Bearded Lady Motorcycle Freak Show
and a friend's party

Hopefully I get some time to get some good rides and pics in. :D

Well this "competition" has been really fun.
I finally interacted with many of the really talented people on this website.
I appreciate the feedback and support.

I entered this contest 4 days before I was getting married.
I'd never done any interaction online before.
I must have figured I didn't have enough stress going on
I'm enjoying married life and my wonderful wife who has been really supportive through this build.
Didn't really do a lot of the more stylin' things I wanted to, but I guess they'll come on subsequent builds.
Thanks to everybody for visiting my posts. :D

Re: Hot Rod 'Liner, Passes Reliability test

Well, I took the 'Liner out for ~20 trouble-free miles today.
I feel it's ready now.
Gearing is rather tall but it's fast when up to speed.

It was hot, humid, and hazy today.
The sun was in and out
so I'll save the sunny shots for the "done" post.
Here are some of the others:

This bike lock-up stand on the Greenway looks kinda like a shadow.

Stopped by Penn and saw Beau.
He got his motorized bike ridable yesterday so is headed down to Bearded Lady tomorrow

Got to the Lake Calhoun. It was packed. The water felt great!

IMG_3950II.jpg

No sun at Lake Harriet Bandshell but nice view

IMG_3954II.jpg

A rabbit started munching on the 'Liner

IMG_3957II.jpg

When I started taking this shot, the monster of Lake Hiawatha appeared
(might have to click on image to see it)
It didn't bother me much while I had another cool off in the lake.

IMG_3961II.jpg

Stopped at Angry Catfish (LBS) for some good iced coffee and their mural.
You can kinda see the all lakes on the map.

It was a Good Day!

Thanks for the compliments. :D
I hope the tire combo and stance are a bit unique.
It Would be cool to see spaceliners come back.
I love riding it! That's the icing on the cake!
I enjoyed seeing the pics of you riding your RBBoff6 bike too 8)

Thanks Man! I'm glad your liking the pics.
It's been really nice this weekend for them.
Can't wait to see some Lake MI shots of yours.

I got out to Bearded Lady.
Lots of really cool MCs and some bikes.
I found Beau and got some shots of his Board Tracker 8) 8)
I'll post his on his thread and post the others on "events" soon.

My knees had a stern talk with me after try to navigate through the crowd at BL.
and the 20 miler Friday.
I had to listen to them so I put a 16 tooth gear in the rear.
The 52/16 is much better. Not as fast put I don't have to crawl from a stop.

Took a nice ride to the river today so here's a couple more.

IMG_4009.jpg

The sun was getting low so it was hard to find sunny spots

IMG_4011II.jpg

The one really great thing about going to 52/16, is that it's much easier to no handed again :D

IMG_4012II.jpg

Here is my goofy attempt to steal Socrates idea to put the "space" in spaceliner.

IMG_3945II.jpg

I'm saving some of the other sunny shots for "done" post
It will be there soon...

Your both dating yourselves.

This picture of Minnehaha Falls didn't work out as well as I wanted.
It was really roaring!

Thanks for looking.

Re: Hot Rod 'Liner, Now in the finished section

Great build, and an enjoyable read. I like the "track testing" and the ride photos. It's inspirational to see a custom bike actually getting used as transportation.

There's going to be a "deep V" wheel set in my future...

Re: Hot Rod 'Liner, a few more pics

Hey Designit,

I'm sorry I haven't looked here for quite a while.

I now know that you also ride your the heck out of your bikes too.
Good to see it.
Keep me posted on any new projects :D

Love this picture! This build turned out extremely well, and i love the final product. Excellent work!!

I'm glad you got a kick out of the picture
Thanks a bunch for the compliments

I've missed discussing your Hawthorne "Viscount"
How is it going? I had to buy one now too
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=43740
I'm using yours and my wife's as models

I would like to really thank all the people that used a vote for the Hot Rod Liner :D
I'm totally surprised, considering how hard it was to chose for my top three.
There were many more talented people that worked much harder than me
Maybe I made up for my building skills with my obsessive need to ride and photo
Hopefully people enjoyed a taste of bike life in Mpls
I think my biggest thrill was to share with everybody how fun a Mpls summer can be :D

Here is a few more pictures that I haven't posted yet

This is a fountain by Lake Harriet's Rose Garden
I was trying to get it set up when I saw a bunch of kids come tearing through the garden
I balanced it and it fell and they were getting closer and louder but I grabbed the shot

IMG_4053.jpg

As they tore through, screaming and laughing,
the mother of the B day girl said "Hi" with a bit of panic in her voice
as she was trying to contain them (not likely)

Here is another fountain across the garden that they all decided to jump in and go crazy
The mother says "maybe I shouldn't let them do that..."
I said "as long as no one drowns, it's all good"
No getting this shot without people

IMG_4055.jpg

Sorry if I don't get back here much
Thanks for looking

Thanks
