Re: Jacked Up Pilot, Alloy springer seat brackets

Great seat work there!
Now you can get back in the saddle!

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, New seat mounts, test ride

Hey Peatbog, Thanks for the stance comp.
I'll now say that yesterday's mount was a Proof of Concept
Got some thicker aluminum today and it's much better (ie safer)
Kept thinking about how you would machine something up

Thanks Pick! Steal away :D
The clock is really ticking loudly for both of us

Thanks for the nice comment Kingfish, but I'll only accept it today
Got in the saddle today :D

So I looked at the setup this morning and shook my head
Went to the metal warehouse and got some 3" channel and 1/4" flat
Simplified the design with the right pieces :D

Still have one more piece I'd like to make but it works now
It's actually really solid. Curved the edges and put in grade 8 bolts
Thought they might look kinda cool (and strong) and they kinda match the brazing
IMG_7019II.jpg

Took it for a 4 mile shake down, changed the bar angle til it was comfortable
Maybe they will stay that way but it looks a little funny
Took it down to the community garden. It rolls smooth..
IMG_7099III.jpg

Then over to the gulley, knees didn't hurt yet
IMG_7012.jpg

Up to the Longfellow park, have to get out of the saddle to get going
IMG_7015II.jpg

And parked in my yard, where I can look at it a bit :D
IMG_7017II.jpg

Think the blued frame looks kinda brown in the right light
Can't wait to get the wheels, it will change the look again
Also need them to mount the truss rods
Thinking about covering the seat but we'll see if there's time

So vacation was productive
Shifter is going to be a pain, but got lots of al stock for a bracket
Thanks for looking
Steve

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, New seat mounts, test ride

Nice, Steve! :D I'd cover the seat a cool classic black with black grips 8)

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, New seat mounts, test ride

Hey Schwinnray, It’s funny my wife said exactly the same thing
So I’m convinced and now need to get it done
Think I might steal Slowriderz idea about an old leather coat for a seat cover

Here are a few more pictures of the seat pan, front bearings set up, and the simplified rear mount
Original
CWCseatoriginal.jpg

Set-back, bolt-together, aluminum-mounted springer (whole seat/springs/mount is ~ 1 ¾ lbs )
29Jul12024II.jpg

2 bearings, 2 aluminum L channel pieces, seat post strap, and hardware
29Jul12081II.jpg

Aluminum 3” channel and ¼” plate bolted onto the frame bracket (still a bit crooked  )
29Jul12082II.jpg

And Thanks so much someone (Bean, I think) for the trick of using paint thinner on the tire stickers
Used this combo and took them off in minutes, can’t wait to do it to the rest of my bikes
29Jul12080II.jpg

Hopefully get the wheels tomorrow and then finish up some more details by Sunday
Thanks for looking
Steve

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, New seat mounts, test ride

Love that seat. It was one of the seats that inspired me towards my current seat when I discovered that I had it.

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, New seat mounts, test ride

You are entered in the Tuff Bike competition. Good luck! Peace

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, Chukkers pics

Randy, thanks and it may have to stay that way if I run out of time
I could always wear some roadie padded spandex shorts
Thanks Kingfish, really like the way you "sharked" your seat
Thanks Skipton, they are on!
Peatbog, hope you get the label thing worked out, Forgot that was zinc on grade 8s
Thanks Jake, hope it still looks that way when done

Got the wheels back today, used the velocity plastic plugs for more room
IMG_7065II.jpg

Glad I didn't leave the rims white, they are less spectacular but kinda fit it better
Had to use a half link to get it spaced out better
IMG_7071III.jpg

Infamous basement shot because it's too dark outside
IMG_7073III.jpg

Think the Chukkers give it something extra
It rides nice but can't wait for the stick shift
Now I got to monkey with the fork a bit and install the truss rods
Then get to building the shifter mount

Tick, Tock  , got to get those ride shots in too
Thanks for all the support and checking it out
Steve

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, Chukkers pics

that wheel/tire combination is classic hot rod! 8) really gives it some attitude. very cool.

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, Chukkers pics

Thanks Guys! :D I appreciate the commnets
It helps me make sure I'm going in the right direction

A couple more shots in the light before work

Steve,

The rear tire looks even BIGGER... on those rims!  8)

Hot Rod to the CORE!

+1 Looks BAD! (in a good way!) Great job Steve!

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, Chukkers pics

That's becuase it's so big it has it's own gravitional pull!

I REALLY dig that wheel combo, do they make those rims in 24"?

Looks great with those wheels. I don't know why but no matter how many times I look at the pics I always find myself drawn to the rear wheel/tire.

Cheers,
Dr. T

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, Chukkers pics

Hey Pick, Thanks! Yours looks Really Bad(in a really good way) too
Glad you like the wheels Randy, thanks
It's awesome that you mentioned your view skew, me too :D

Thanks DrT! You cracked me up big time!
They have different styles but not as deep
http://www.velocityusa.com/default.asp?contentID=603
They have 24" (iso 507mm)for a normal size but only ~24mm deep
I've see a 24" (iso520mm) for BMX/recumbent Deep V (30 deep)
The Spaceliner is 43mm and these are 32mm deep
Super tough wheels, so heavier too

Worked again Thurs nite and then thought I'd take Friday off for some bike work
It was productive and I got some things purdied up
So I'll play the guessing game for once
It'll be riding by tomorrow morning so here is some art shots til then

May have to change a few things once I ride it

So many cool bikes finishing up, :D
This is a great build off!
The world is a better place with the addition of the Build Off Bikes!

Thanks for looking
Steve

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, Finshing up, art shots

Looks so cool, I want to take it for a spin!!!! or maybe take off with it & never come back!

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, Done!

Thanks Bike2112! Your bike is really cool
Peatbog, not steroids, only caffeine for the muscle behind it
Hey Pick, I guess that's a good thing (for You!)

Well, It's done! :D
Got a few more things I want to do but everything is there
The minute I started a shakedown ride, it started to rain
so maybe get a few more details done
IMG_7096III.jpg

So I used some hammered copper paint (plus clear) on the pitted truss rods and seat springs
Took the seat pan down to bare metal (pitted, surprise) then primered, painted and clear coated

The shifter is a ratchet mechanism that works awesome!
Forward for downshift and back for upshift
Like the way the mechanism looks (plus all metal) so I'm leaving the plastic cover off
That's the second "art" shot

Like the road bike stem better too, another horizontal surface to blend in
Hopefully the extra work yesterday makes it a little classier (yet still tough)

Sure nice having a first gear. It's good for old bent knees
Sorry about the rainy shot but it's supposed to clear up :D

Thanks again for all the encouragement guys! :D :D
Now I'm going to relax a bit

You know one of the best things about this competition is that
Finishing your bike seems almost anticlimactic
Until you realize you get to ride it now! Whoppee!
