Mack Jr

Went to an auction yesterday at an old salvage yard here in Liberty Mo…
I was looking to buy one of the 150+ cars and trucks…
I’ve been wanting to build an old rod for years…
Just never had a chance…
Well… Looks like I got my project…

That's my Brother and his son in the last photo(he's building a kit Cobra)
It’s an old 1936-38 Mack Jr 1 ton to 3 ton truck…
Apparently Mack contracted with REO truck to build some smaller
Mack branded trucks….
According to internet info less than 5000 Mack Jr were made…
Almost wish it would not cost a fortune to restore….
Think I’ll find a full size truck frame to put the body and fenders on…
My brother suggested a roll over dodge dually with a Cummins diesel…
It could be pretty kool….
Planning on about two years or sooner to be on the road…
Best of all paid $70 for the truck…

Now that looks like a fun project.....and when your done it will be the only one at the show. I was gonna buy a 39 White one time and my EXWIFE put down the big "I dont think SO"

You just bought 1? I see several there I would love to have. The Dodge would be a good choice for that cab to sit on. Good luck.

I don't like going to old car auctions because I want all of the cars there. :mrgreen:

$70, huh??? It is a rare truck. Be prepared to spend a lot of money on that restoration.

and thats the fun part of uncommon things..........takes forever to find parts and most of the time theyre not cheap :|

no they were model A's...
one had a motor and rear axle dropped through the roof...
It went for $400...
don't remember any la salle...
i had bid on 6, maybe 7 cars that went for way more than i would have spent...
almost think the guy i was biding against may have felt sorry for me...
he must have bought 30 cars at about $400+ a piece.... :shock:
if he had only known that less 5000 were built............
it might have been a whole different story...

Having built streetrods for about 15 years ...in a past life...I found one thing rang true. It cost the same amount of money to build any of them .A radiator and motor and trans all cost the same. If you do decide to slip the old sheetmetal on some newer frame ,you will run into the problem of it being titled as a whatever you chose as running gear.The frame carries the title. It might not be bad because you have a title when your through instead of trying to find one for the old vehicle you started with. It wont be worth as much because it might wind up a 1998 dodge truck. In any event you have vision on that one.Good luck. :shock:

Mike, what a cool old truck, but this can't stop you from building bikes too. I know you will build one then work on the truck for awhile and than build another bike. the wife even said cool truck, but I can't have one, so can I live vicariously through you. I'll need to come by and look this over. Dos

As always hope everyone is doing well…
Spent Saturday spraying down hinges and assessing My Mack Jr…
I decided she is really ruff…
But I think I can save her…
I can tell she wants to rule the road again…
The cab and door panels are all steel on wood frame…
All the wood will need to be replaced …
Good thing I paid attention in shop class 30 years ago…
Most of the steel it in good shape for being 71 year old…
Brought two cans of Liquid Wrench with me to loosing the hinges…
I also took more photos…

Me and Pappy did manage to get some stuff moving…
The hood is functioning much better…
As is the passenger door…
Got the windshield to open…

Guess the dissemble process has started…
The driver’s door hinge screws were rotted off…

I’m thinking this is going to be a really fun truck...
I'll keep every one posted...

Well mike, I'm glad to see you get the a/c to work. I know you being an a/c tech that was some what easy. Is that a crank out a/c or the flip and push out type? It looks like you will have many days of fun with this one. Good luck

Hey, that's too cool! My Dad is a Mack fanatic... I will have to show him this later. The backyard is filled with old Mack B models... his two main work trucks are a B-81 and a much cooler B-75. Good luck with the new truck!
