a while back when helping clean out my aunts garage I came across these and i have had them saved for a project like this

originally i didnt know what they went to
but recently i discovered what they go to
any one care to guess what these are from

this is how it will look partially attached to the fork
still needs a bit of modifying

i hope this weekend i can start to get this fork attached to the rear of the frame

Bed frame lugs that attached the rails to headboard or footboard.

Yeah, I was gonna say bed rail hardware as well. I used to work in a furniture store.

Got a decent amount accomplished over the weekend
so I will be posting updates through out the day

widened the new rear drop outs

you can see by the widened end of the slot how much i needed to grind away to fit the standard size rear axle

btw a few people guessed bed rail hardware which might also be correct
but these particular pair came off a sectional sofa
its the hardware between the two section that allow it to slide in and out when being put together or taken apart

i forgot that the rat trap fork rockers have a spacer on them so the fork itself is 1/2 inch too narrow for the coaster brake
i added (for now) a couple of nuts as spacers for current mock up purposes

and i drilled out holes in the frame to attach part of the rat trap to it

but if you look closely the frame is different
that's because i found a way to make a50's 24" monark frame work
so for now i will be using this frame instead of the shelby
(which will now be the back up frame)


I was able to make it work because of the angled tandem dogbone
that i found buried (so to say) in a location i didnt expect to find any bike parts
had i found it earlier i could have started with the monark frame from the get go

as you can see it sits under the bearing races
ny plan all along was to have a low mounted ape hanger

so here is the monark frame mocked up

now i can run a thick piece of steel from the new drop outs (in place of the spacer nuts) all the way to the sear post
and find a way to attach the rattrap stem to the kick stand part of the frame to give it the extra rigidity it will need since its been stretched out

Every time I see a fork on back it makes me want to do the same. This looks great that way.

A low drop seat post and a tractor seat and I'd be good to roll !!

The engineering is coming along great on this. I can see the lines of it now. What is always cool with builds like this, is watching how creative builders can get with bolt ons to the point of building a bike that looks like if must be welded together. Keep it up brother!!

I figured before i go buy some metal stock i would look through my pile of doner frames to see if i could use anything

the rear legs on the Schwinn exerciser look like they may do the trick

Just need to cut them free and work on bolting them up

You can see in the pic the holey seat post from the exerciser where i roughly plan to have it located

not a whole lot to report yet
but i did get some more of the brackets mocked up for the back extension

you can see one of the 5" L brackets in the back
and 2 of the pieces i cut down
the holes line up with the drop out
the less i have to try and drill the better chance this bike will ride true and straight

here is a close up with the exerciser extension butted up
I had to bend the rear tabs
now i just need to attach to frame before i drill out the final hole in the rear to bolt it all together

trimmed the seat post bolt area of the exerciser bars to mock up to the frame and rattrap
but more trimming may be required

I have 2 ways that it can be mounted

1 bolts up to the mid part of the seat post bar and is lined up with the middle bar
it also passes thru the rear of the frame

2 attaches to the seat post clamp (which is spot welded on from the factory)
and travels over the rear of the frame

both ways have their pros and cons
but i may try to go with version 1
it would be stronger attached to the center of the seat post upright
and the bars line up with the chain guard

but number 2 does hide the seat post clamp

Would it bee too much trouble to mock it up with a wheel?

i will not know yet as far as mocking it up with the wheel
i need to figure out a way to attach the rattrap steering tube to the bottom of the frame and attach the rear drop outs
only then will i know if i can mock it up with a wheel
i am hoping i can mock it up without drilling into the seat post frame
but from what i have seen i dont think it will inhibit the tire size to much if at all
more worried about possible chain clearance issues
my only concern is what should i do with the seat post clamp are if i dont attach it there
and the way the bars criss cross also looks a bit cluttered to me

I like the second version better. It gives the frame more volume.

worked more on the mock up of the rear before i go and drill into the frame
bolts attaching the rear drop outs are not for the final design but just for mock up
you can really see the plan i have for the seat post position now

rear clearance looks good
its as wide if not slightly wider than the rattrap width
and it looks like chain clearance should be ok in too with this set up

just need to figure out a set up for the rattrap stem to bolt to frame
should have more stuff bolted up on the rear extension next weekend
