Started attacking the frame. Here's what it looks like. You can actually see a good bit of purple, but that belies the amount of corrosion this frame is suffering from.
I put aircraft paint stripper on it, but that doesn't do much of anything to rust. It acts like a barrier so I've had to tackle it with sanding. The... rust... is... everywhere. So instead of an hour or two... it's going to take several hours that are going to stretch over some days.

Sanding...uhg...the fun part...;-)
Looks like a good job for a power tool. I use one of those triangle head cordless sander deals with 80 + 100 grit pads. Knocks it down pretty quick and I actually look forward to the battery running down to take a break.

I've got an orbital sander, but it can't get into all the nooks and crannies. I spent probably an hour just on the head tube and attached double top tube areas. There was a lot of rust that had to be manually worked down, then I found some of the brass weld had been messily applied, so out with the file to smooth it down. It sucks being a perfectionist some times.
I did find one helpful trick. I wanted to clean up all the gunk and rust on the thread for the fork tube, so I used my wire wheel on my bench grinder. Then I just went around the fork to try to clean up some other areas. It really smoothed them out. Especially those ridiculous tiers at the tops of the fork legs. How the heck am I supposed to clean up inside those?? I'll do the best I can with them I suppose.

Small file or strips of emory cloth for the fork crown...you probably wont get much paint in there...emory cloth might work good for those frame tubes. Sanding sucks I feel your pain. I did some filing on the schwinn welds but those ones on the bottom bracket are hard to get perfectly smooth.
Just be glad you're not shoveling snow which is what I did this morning...low of 11 today.

I'm a wire wheel guy too, I like a crowned wheel in my small hand grinder. But wear eye protection cuz them little wires go everywhere. It reached almost everything on the Stingray, and emory on the rest...

I'm wondering if there is a wire wheel I can get for my angle grinder. And if there is, if I can use it without killing myself.
Yep that's what I use. But I didn't get a knotted one like the one Luke's showing. The knotted ones may hold their wires in longer. My angle grinder is at the upper limit of the RPM's the wheel was supposed to be rated for...

I use quick strip discs,can't get into the corners very well but does the job really well
Knotted ones do seem to last longer, throw less wires and work quicker, but may be too aggressive for some soft metals, fine for decent steel...

Alright... puttin' the brakes on my builds. My car was stolen last night. Walked out to an empty driveway this morning. So... not sure what this means. I may have to put all this aside till later.
