Yeah your right about the Crown part but I just couldn't get it to pop in my head when I answered

They called it Imperial as it's own name to compete directly with Cadillac and Lincoln but it's still technically a Chrysler Imperial and if I can remember right I remember reading it was 1955–1983 when they called the make just Imperial.

They weren't even 'technically' Chryslers. The 1955 - 1968 Imperials were built on a unique platform not shared with Chryslers and they were even built in their own factory. While Chryslers became unibody cars commencing 1960, Imperials proudly remained body-on-frame cars until including 1966. When they finally also succumbed to monocoque construction in 1967, they were still built on a unique platform not shared with Chryslers. Only when the fuselage models were introduced in 1969, Imperials became badge engineered Chryslers again, but still weren't called Chrysler Imperial for the time being. The 1975 cars were the first ones since 1954 to be called 'Chrysler Imperial' , hence it is then that Imperial ceased to be an independent make, and not 1983.

Platform differences doesn't mean it's not a Chrysler, the fox body platform Mustangs & Thunderbirds are different from the other Fords body platforms but they are still called a Ford Mustang and a Ford Thunderbird with the same going with the Mercury Capri & Mercury Cougar.

Imperial is just one of the first models to look and have frame differences yet be the same make like most car companies started doing in the in the 50's unlike before where the main differences were exterior & interior trims depending on model along with either 2 doors to wagons or even business coupes just like when it came to Fury's which were made as 2 door hardtops until 1959 when they expanded the model to a 4 door & convertibles, also the Corvette is different than the other Chevy's but a Chevy none the less and the same goes with the Thunderbird along with the Valiant that are included in the same way of being defferent yet the same.

Sorry I took long to write because I was trying to make sure everything is done right.
