noname 68 schwinn fatwheel build..

Well thanks to my brothers Christmas present to me (26x3 cruiser shop wheel) this year it's time to build again!
So insert field fresh $25 dollar 68 Schwinn typhoon, some donor parts from other bikes that will have to be built after, and some time on the welder and this is where it's at so far..

So after looking at it for like hours, I decided that the cantilevers at the seat post would be the best place to cut to widen the rear the extra 1 1/4" that's needed to fit the 3" wheel.

At this point it wasn't wide enough yet but you get the idea.

I jump forward on the build but you can see what was done, plated the frame at the seat post, overall it was 1/2" per side to get the 1 1/4 needed at the rear, at the bottom I cut out 4 inches and bent some tube up and added extra length for drop and strecth, about 4 inches for a total of 7 3/4 inches.

Here's the wheel

Laced it up to make sure the donor spokes/hub would work. The wheel will be black.

Using a 26x2.125 tire and stretching it, the standard 26 tube just lifted the tire off the rim so had to go get a 26x3.0 tube.

It fit so tossed some parts on it.

Trying different bars.. The mini apes are off a schwinn exercize bike.

At this point it's been torn back down and wheel and some other parts have been sent for powder coating, working on the frame now finishing up the welding/smoothing and figuring out some colors for the final paint.. Just may rattle can on some satin colors to see what it looks like before the final choice. More to come.

Not to mention I had to order a new wheel set for my Woman's bike! Kinda stole some parts, oops...
Guess that's another project before spring.

Thanks! Had this idea for a while now. This is the second Schwinn I have done the stretch on the bottom. That bike I still have and ride every ride and it was modded in 2009.

I did something similar. I replaced the BB with an OCC one so the lower spread was easy. The top had the arch bracket removed then the uppers were carefully heated and bent into a new position. The arch bracket was then moved "up" from it's original spot and welded back in for strength.
