Nothing Special, CWC Hiawatha

Got this frame/fork/fender set out of the Denver Old Bikes Club spring swap free pile at the end of the swap! Bars are welded to stem, so that will be tossed. Hopefully I can get the stem out of the steerer with minimal effort. Will be attempting to remove the red spray bomb paint job, try and reveal some OG paint under it, if not we shall see if I go bare metal or repaint with this guy. Not sure about parts, other than a bendix 2spd automatic thats going into the rear wheel. Probably keep the cranks and chainring, or go bmx cranks with OG ring. Parts and build will be "nothing special", but planning on some accents and custom highlights, have some ideas floating around my head. Here is the frame when I picked it up

That is one of my favorite frames too. If I ever find one, I'll dig the old motor I found, out of the honey hole it's stashed in. That big belly in the down tube is begging for a motor mount.

So I have not put a wrench to it yet... been tired from the Fruita trip, literally made my first post from the road. But I figured I would do a photo shoot tonight to document the status and see where I am at with this project!

First off, I soaked the stem/steerer tube with 3in1 oil for a night, see if I could free it up. It came out much easier than expected! Maybe there will be less rust and weathering than I thought... the crank bearings are crunchy, as are headset bearings, the cranks themselves are bent... enough so that it wore a dent in the driveside chainstay. Fork appears straight, straight enough anyways, need to spread it a little to fit the hub I plan on using. Speaking of hubs, the rear will be a Bendix 2spd yellow band automatic, front was dug out of my hub drawer earlier today. It is a Shimano 333 high flange hub with Wing Nuts! And the finish closely matches the rear Bendix hub. There is a shot of the bar/stem and the welding done, I may try and salvage the stem, grind the welding smooth down to the stem material ifs I cans. Seatpost was in my parts stash, was trying to sell it day of the swap, so glad I did not! There are some close ups of the paint, and what I believe is OG pinstriping on one of the fenders? Who knows, probably be stripped to bare metal if needed, powder coat? Spray bomb? Clean bare metal? We will see where it goes!

Started pulling it apart. Much less rust than I was expecting in the headset and bottom bracket. The bottom bracket looks so good I may just go one piece cranks on it, but I am wanting to go bmx 3pc cranks for strength, I tend to bend 1pc stuff too easily. Pulled the crown race off so I could pull the chrome fork cap, I really like the look of the triple plate fork as opposed to covering it with a piece of chrome trim. That trim piece looks chunky and out of place in my opinion. Popped the cups out of the headset and bottom bracket, need to pull the headbadge and start stripping paint, frame and fork look to have been red originally.

Got my chainring sorted. Planning on using this 3 Arrows double chainring setup as a single ring. The large ring is missing every other tooth, so it looks like a skiptooth but is not. I cannot use a skiptooth chain on the Bendix 2spd, but want to retain the look of the skiptooth ring. This will allow that, and add some style. I went to the hardware store this morning, found some brass hardware that will work for sandwiching them together, and got it ready to install. I plan on using as much brass hardware as possible with the accessories and custom touches.

Paint stripping, or an attempt to strip paint has started... heard the oven cleaner method works for some paint so I am starting there. If I find this to be too troublesome I may have it sandblasted. Believe I am going the direction of bare metal, or if I do paint it will be a dark silver, almost black in color.

If your going to leave it bar metal you can just use paint stripper if the oven cleaner doesn't work . Your making good headway [emoji1303]

The first treatment of OC seemed to help soften the paint, was using a rag and the red was coming off. Trying not to use harsh chemicals, doing it outdoors, have a tarp over my lawn to help prevent damage to the grass. Hoping the oven cleaner treatment will soften it up enough to use a brass wire brush in a drill with less effort. Attempted removal that way first and it was tough, hoping the OC treatment helps. Last resort is to pay a friend to sandblast it, but also dont want to outsource anything, prefer to do it myself!

Aren't you mixing chain widths?
That rear hub/cog is probably 1/8th inch for sure.
The 3 Arrows is a derailleur sprocket, so skinny chain.
I had almost that same setup on mine, with a two speed kickback and a 3 Arrows ring and there was slop on the sprocket. It works but... did you change the cog on the hub?
I did like scanning thru your build and seeing parallel parts to my build, big flange front hub and kickback rear, makes me feel like I'm on the right track.

I will be mixing chainring widths. Being an 1/8" on the Bendix, and 3/32" on the 3Arrows ring. A 1/8" will fit a 3/32" ring but will have play on the ring like you stated. I am going to be playing with the chainline, make sure its as straight as possible, and shouldn't have to worry about the extra width or chain migration on the ring so much. Only time will tell, this is going to be a once a month on sundays kind of ride, maybe the occasional wednesday night in summers. The sunday ride is a minimum 15 miles if I drive to the start, I usually prefer riding, so durability and having no problems while cruising is important!
