I was watching one of those restoration shows the other day. They made the statement that square nuts were always used until 1936 when Hex nuts were invented.
If that is true, why do earlier bikes have hex nuts on them?
Curious
 
dont know when the switch was mad but the older farm equipment had square nuts and the farmers always called them burrs
 
My 41 western flyer had some square on it that I'm guessing was a quick replacement when somebody lost the hex nuts lol
