First I'd like to say I didn't do this to it.........and second is "I LIKE IT" and other than a complete clean up it will probably stay this way. May change the seat and add a reflector, but thats about it. This thing is a cool old bike and rides like a Caddy. It's a CL find to boot........and had been on there for a month with no buyers! Was listed as an old Schwinn 3 speed, best offer or trade....and it is an old 3 speed. I just decided last night "what the heck" I'll go take a look as it was close by.

It is a real Phantom as you can see the ghost of lettering under the paint on the chain guard and the scallops at the front tubes. Looks to have been put together in this configuration a while back. Still has the original S-2 rims but had a three speed hub spoked into the rear. Has a Carlisle Lightning tire on the rear and a Goodyear Thunderbolt on the front. Looks to be either a 54' or 56' and I may need a little help pinning that down. I need to unbolt the rear fender strut to see the whole #. Not sure what the fenders are off of? Seat looks to be an excesise bike seat ...does have an aluminum Troxel tag on it. Sturmey Archer twist grip shifter and Shimano rear hub. Center kick stand added but the original Schwinn stand is still there also. What else can I say about? Take a look...........

.......and all for about the price of a decent dinner for two......without tip and the movie! Just goes to show you never know what your gonna find!

Yeah, we really should pay more attention to those "3 speed" listings - I saw the same ad on CL over & over & in Indy & all it said was 3 speed bike. I'm not really in the market for one although I wouldn't mind having one with rod brakes but one day on impulse I opened it and there sat a very nice condition Grants 3 speed w/ the SHIMANO STICK SHIFT for $50! And to boot, I already know the guy. The pieces of a future RatRod just keep falling together. So the moral of the story is ...

Cool find, but I gotta ask, does that S/A shifter work well with the Shimano Hub? I had always heard that the indexing was different and you couldn't do that, but if it works, I have the means to set up a bike like that.

I not a purist snob, I love that machine! It's unique, cool and its a Schwinn, great find. Just clean it up and ride..... :D

Excellent find. I wonder if that's the original 2 speed that came with it. I had the same shimano wheel on my 53 for a long time, then went with the 2 speed. The auto takes a little time to get used to, but it sure is a lot of fun.

Takes a little getting used to as I haven't ridden a 3 speed since I was a kid. But it shifts just fine. You do have to play with it a lttle somtimes to get it to shift up or down so the indexing may not be perfect. Suits me ok.

that is one of the sweetest bikes i've seen... period. i believe that it rides like a caddy, especially with the 3speed hub. now, with the mix of shimano hub and s.a. shifter, it may "work" now, but after time mixing the two different brands of components will were down the shimano hub components and possibly fail down the road. id find either a good shimano 3speed shifter to replace the s.a., or put the bendix rear wheel on. i actually have several shimano 333 and 3c hubs and several s.a. aw and an sw wheels.

anyways, sweet ride... i dig everything about it!

The Shimanos aren't very strong no matter how they are shifted, but they definitely last longer with the right one.
