My 12 dollar find of the day. No, I wont take 20. :D what year is it?







And this wasn't at the scrapyard, but rather my girlfriends dads house. He's incredible with a welder. His "work" truck:

Nice pick! That would be a Murray-built Elgin. That frame style is considered to have only been built in 1940-41 but I think the chainguard style is unique to 1941 so I'd go with that. Though.. hopefully that's not a Higgins badge because that would complicate things being around the war and leftover parts being slowly used up after the war with a mix of old and new parts. An Elgin badge would make this easy.

It has a JC Higgins headbadge. Complicated is what makes it fun. :)
 
Like Jp said with that 40/41 frame and a JC Higgins badge it would be an early post war bike. Im not exactly sure when after the War Murray started producing bikes and Sears starting selling them again but im guessing this bike is no latter than a 1947 model.

Well, with whatever it is, its a great rider 8) It just needed a little air, and some love on the hub in the front, and wha-laa.

looking at 46-47-48. Defiantly Murray built. What you have is a thrown together early post war bicycle. Sears had a lot of bike orders to fill so many were thrown together with mixed and leftover parts.

This is when you find Columbia, Monark, Ross, etc. badged J.C. Higgins. Sears badged anything Higgins to fill the Christmas orders after the war.

I'll take a look at my Elgin/Higgins book to look for this model.

No evidence in the catalog that this was a standard model J.C. Higgins, so this is defiantly a left over prewar! Awesome find
 
Cool! 8) I like it. Its a nice riding bike, for sure. Quite possibly the best 12 dollars I've ever spent.
 
Very nice find indeed. Makes sense about tossing em together, just had never hear of that, extra cool. I have much much more than that into my similarly framed 40/41 Custom Elgin.
