The first bikes for Charlie Kelly and Gary Fisher's Mountain Bike Company were handmade by Tom Ritchey

Rumor has it, that one of Tom's bikes got shipped to Japan, and a thousand Stumpjumpers were born. Other claims are that it was designed by Tim Neenan, shown here on an early Stumpy

"Another supplier was Specialized Bicycles which was an up-and-coming bike company that was dipping their toes in the mountain bike market. Specialized would go on to make their version of the Ritchey MountainBike that was mass-produced in 1981. Other companies would use the Ritchey MountainBike as a frame of reference to mass-produce bikes."
