Is there a way to remove the gunk and be able to paint the spokes?

a good De-Greaser and a small Wire Brush ( dollar store )

but it'll be tough to do JUST the spokes.
You could clean it all up,
scuff it up a bit with steel whool,
Prime it
and Paint The Spokes AND the Hub all the same color,
I did it on an Old Girls Frame and it looks pretty good,

hope you never have to true the wheel, kev! :D

I hope so too..

Changa...to the best of my Knowledge a wheel is
trued buy adjusting the Spoke Tension at The Rim end.
The Hub stays put!

but it would get all gibbled up in the Truing machine / vice / whatchamacallie if I needed to get mine trued up.

It's definatly a Rat way of doing it,
but I did take a set of Lousy English Oddball rims and spruce
em up a bit with paint!

How much does that go for?

it's not the price...because the spokes and nipples are painted it might ruin the paint to true the wheel now...if you paint your wheels, make sure the wheels are as true as you want them!
