Thinking about converting the 24-inch Huffy Good Vibrations (green) from coaster brake to freewheel. The 20-inch Rampage (orange) might be a suitable donor. Next steps are counting spokes, measuring the hub, and visiting the parts department to see what 24-inch wheels are available. If we have a match, surgery is next. A front caliper brake has been added to the Huffy since that picture was taken. If the transplant works out, we'll need to add a rear caliper too.
Well, the applicability of Murphy's law is once again demonstrated. The design team checked compatibility of the two hubs (20-inch and 24-inch). Everything seemed copacetic: number of spokes (check), hub width (check), hub diameter (check). The work crew went to work and disassembled (unlaced?) the 24-inch wheel. Attention was turned to the 20-inch wheel. Here things came to a halt. The freewheel is one that has no way to be removed without destroying it. Frankly, the design team didn't know there was such a thing (file under "lessons learned"). The project management team has now taken another approach and is acquiring a new single-speed freewheel.
