Not really the infancy, more like the case of PCs/Macs whatever were the first time computers got into the home, the technology has just become more affordable for a variety of reasons for anybody to do it in their own home or in small businesses. This type of technology is well over 20 years old more like 30 plus, and has been used to rapid prototype many mechanical parts. I remember seeing it for the first time in the late 80s maybe early 90s used for making prototype missile parts, straight from CAD, something that would have been much more involved to do in a CNC setup, probably couldn't even have been done in one piece that way.

Yeah they also have 3d printers that will do METAL! Pretty soon you'll be able to go to Wal-mart and pick out a bike on a flash drive and they will print it up for you. Or if they were to just put one of these machines in each store and make parts for us imagine the money they could make! Custom fender ornaments, custom head badges, and whatever else you can think of. Check this out, they make a metal door handle that is just cool.

We have a kid at work that has his own 3d printer uses plastic I rolls that looks like weed wipper string. He has made some cool stuff and a few practical things. The bike thing is kinda goofy in the fact that they do the bearings .....its like the guys that carve wooden chains ..cool but why? Better on the bike would have been to use real bearings in the parts that call for them and have a semiusable bike as a result.

They're using 3D printers to make AR-15 lower receivers. (the main part of the AR-15 rifle) Legal so far. They break quickly with the material they're using now but I'd guess that will improve.

I predict we will eventually have all the computer generated, 3D printed bike tanks that we are all missing, and for cheap! 8) Gary
