Well for lack of a better name I'm calling this my pub klunker project. I've always respected and wanted to build a klunker bike like the ones that came out of Colorado in the '80s. But here in Kansas we really don't have too many mountains to concur so it's not been a high priority. But, contrary to popular belief we do have quite a few hills, at least around the KS/MO border where we are here in Kansas City. So when I came across a nice rear wheel/tire combo I got from my friend Jon that featured a 24" wheel, 3” Fatty-O white wall and had a disc brake w/ Shimano Free Forward gear cluster I thought it sounded like a good start for a klunker project. But with a twist, this would be a street/pub Klunker. Another friend Pappy had a FF sprocket and crank, and also got a Schwinn 5 speed derailer from him so the drive train was done. Then needed a frame, and along came a rusty crusty 51 DX frame from my friend Lance.

Got the frame sand blasted and the white head tube area painted, then cold weather set in so a few months went by with no progress. In that time I did run across a girls “83 Schwinn Cruiser 5 that will become the wife’s klunker mate, more pictures to come as it gets done. Finally I got to finish the paint yesterday and started to put it all back together.

I still need to figure out the bars, seat and other details. Gona try to have it ready to ride in a pub crawl this weekend. More pics to come as I finalize it.

Man, that is a cool disc brake, how old do you figure that is? Could we get more pictures of it? That's gonna be a cool bike!

What a beaut!

Well, I made a little progress with the build today, but also had a few set backs. First I tried a set of BMX/Mountian bike bars but I just couldn't get my head around the look so I went with a pair of angel wing bars for a little more traditional cruiser look. I then got the brake and shift cables all hooked up, and thats when the fun set in. First problem was the Schwinn GT 150 derailer had a real clearance problem with the ff 5 speed cluster, so I ended up having to rob the Shimino SIS derailer of my Crusier 6 which works OK for now till I can find another better derailer option. Then the disc brake, well that's another story? Maybe I was expecting too much (disc brake compaired to drums on a car) well no compairison here, the disc brake is less than spectacular. Well, work in progress.

man that turned out great, glad i could help!! and to see it in action tonight was cool. forgot to take it for a ride...next time.

Hey Jon, thanks for the good words and especially for the rear wheel/brake/tire set up that was the original inspiration for this build. Sorry you didn't get to take her for a spin last night at the pub crawl, but feel free to any time. But, hopefully I will find a better quality caliper by then so you can stop. Was a little scary, I was just glad I didn't do a face plant into the back of a car or bus our one of you guys while coming down that hill from Wesport to the Plaza. Whooo! ha!
