Well for lack of a better name I'm calling this my pub klunker project. I've always respected and wanted to build a klunker bike like the ones that came out of Colorado in the '80s. But here in Kansas we really don't have too many mountains to concur so it's not been a high priority. But, contrary to popular belief we do have quite a few hills, at least around the KS/MO border where we are here in Kansas City. So when I came across a nice rear wheel/tire combo I got from my friend Jon that featured a 24" wheel, 3” Fatty-O white wall and had a disc brake w/ Shimano Free Forward gear cluster I thought it sounded like a good start for a klunker project. But with a twist, this would be a street/pub Klunker. Another friend Pappy had a FF sprocket and crank, and also got a Schwinn 5 speed derailer from him so the drive train was done. Then needed a frame, and along came a rusty crusty 51 DX frame from my friend Lance.
Got the frame sand blasted and the white head tube area painted, then cold weather set in so a few months went by with no progress. In that time I did run across a girls “83 Schwinn Cruiser 5 that will become the wife’s klunker mate, more pictures to come as it gets done. Finally I got to finish the paint yesterday and started to put it all back together.
I still need to figure out the bars, seat and other details. Gona try to have it ready to ride in a pub crawl this weekend. More pics to come as I finalize it.
