Was out shopping today with my wife and wandered into the local Target Australia store to look at bikes, first bike I see stops me in my tracks!

Flat black, classic lines, twin top bar, full fenders, coaster brake and a cop holder built into the "tank"!

Rat-Rod bikes in the mainstream shops? All you would need to do is remove the reflectors, change the pedals, clean up the dodgy welds, remove the front brake, replace that top plastic piece at the cup holder with a custom made steel piece and you would still have an average bike, but it would look better!

Much better to stick to a vintage or completely custom ride in my opinion!

Re: Rat-Rod Bikes goes mainstream?

That's true, I apologise... It would at least be a bike with some Rat style for those just starting out, it was interesting to see the reaction of people in the shop to seeing it, most loved the look of it, and they were already sold out, only had the display model left...

I wonder if the bikes here on ratrodbikes.com had any influence on the design of the bike? The main designer may even be a member here?

Luke.

Re: Rat-Rod Bikes goes mainstream?

That , my friend , is why I never repaint anything. For fear of my bike being mistaken for a bike off the rack

Luke,
No apology needed. I was just pointing out that some folks are not handy like the members here. Myself, like you, I would not be interested in this type of bike.

I don't know it would be cool with a 6 inch stretch, some apes, a 'nanner seat, some white walls, and a Pabst blue ribbon in the cup holder.

Re: Rat-Rod Bikes goes mainstream?

I see some of you fabing guys doing that cup holder technique on your next gender reassignment project.

Re: Rat-Rod Bikes goes mainstream?

Target price 150
schwinn price 500
I think it would be cool if you made the cup holder out of burl wood and put more of an old school seat on it

Re: Rat-Rod Bikes goes mainstream?

Truly, I think there are Lurkers who come to these bike forums to get new ideas! Obviously in this case the forum is the trend setter and now the bike companies act like they are coming up with something new.

Re: Rat-Rod Bikes goes mainstream?

i like a chainguard on this bike :) It has a lot of space to put some art on it.

As for mainstream ... On the other hand, the more classic looking bicycles the better. Moreover, buying one of those can stimulate someone to get into actual building. My first bike was Russian rip off Marin Drake 3 bike; i had it for one season only and gave it away as the present. And started to build KHE frame- based anniversary cruiser (muscle bike styled) instead.
I thins it's ok and we have nothing to worry about except new wave of simple questions from someone who bought one of those.

 True!
When they start adding "patina" and rust to the factory bikes, it will be time to worry...

Luke.

Well actually, they do sorta, I went to a new bike shop in my area and I looked at the bare metal version and the frame to me had the look of a old paint frame, stripped then clear coated. Maybe I'm just "seeing" things   :| :!:

Re: Rat-Rod Bikes goes mainstream?

Well, I probably look pretty silly now, after saying what I did about these when I first posted this, I just put one of these on lay-away at my local Target...

Seen some pics of these done up on here and other places and they really can look cool!

This is NRFECCHOLO's Schwinn badged version from the show me your Schwinn's page:

Plans for mine are homemade black bent springer, 6" frame stretch, lower the rear a little, respray primer gray with gloss clear, black banana seat and monster apes... Probably make up a steel cup holder insert to replace the plastic one...
Hopefully be a real nice cruiser when it is done...

Luke.

Re: Rat-Rod Bikes goes mainstream? Eating my words...

Now we have to convince them we want Springer front ends that steer correctly!
And more disc brakes....
