Here is my latest bike. An original 3 speed 1952 Black Phantom. I am torn about what to do with this bike. I had plans to restore it, but now i'm thinking I'll repair it and ride it as an original Rat Rod. Pretty cool huh? Tell me what you think. The tires are original Goodyear AirWheels that are in fantastic shape. The 1951 Sturmey Archer hub needs to be rebuilt, so the bike is not ridable now. It needs new shifter and brake cables as well as some vintange black Schwinn grips. I'll post pics as it goes along. I don't think there are a lot of people out there riding original Black Phantoms as a rat rod.(Sorry Photobucket keeps croping the picture, tried resizing the photo, but can't seem to figure it out)

Let me try this one more time. [img]http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n411/55Phantom/Picture574.jpg

the 3 speed phantoms were pretty rare. its cool to see one on here.

Just get your fenders rolled and that bad boy is ready for action.

I bet it would looks really cool fenderless with a set of Felt Quick Brick white walls.

Awesome! It's only original once. Just get the 3 speed workin', hammer and dolly out those fenders, add some grips and ride out!

I personally like it original. I ride an original 47 Autocycle in similar condition daily. If it gets a little ding or scratch you wont be heartbroken. Its a rare bike, and in pretty nice original condition. Besides, if you give it a fancy resto, people will just think its a re-pop. You aught to post this in the Jalopy thread!

That bike is too cool 8) , I personally prefer originals over restorations, they have more character.

I'm probably going to send the fenders out to Wes The Fender Doctor soon, he just cut me a coupla keys for the locking springer. Just got some grips, they're repops but they will do until I locate a nice pair of originals. Don't think I'll put a tank back on it unless I can get a good deal on an untouched original, I kinda like it without the tank anyway. You're right, it's only original once and the frame and paint are decent. Got to find someone I trust to rebuild the sturmey hub, and get this thing running. Just picked up a vintage shifter cable and an orginal S/A 3 speed shifter. The one that came with the bike was destroyed. It looks like the kid who had this bike last went on to be a BMX Champion or a demolition derby king! The bike got it in the front and the rear and the chainguard with need some minor straightening. The crank is bent in slightly. All in all very repairable I think. I post some more pics soon. I also decided I'm not going to do anything more than dust it off. No steel wool for this bike. Also the metal seat pan needs some leather, any suggestions ?

Oh I see you're in NC.....I'm in Greenville.
I'd snatch the fenders off. As for the seat.........the only thing I'd do is slam it down as low as possible. Leave it metal ,they're more comfy than you would think!

i was thinking the same thing about not seeing any rat phantoms. If i get my hands on one thats exactly what ill do to it, got a rat bike n the works right now called "Rustina", Ill post pics soon. The bike is cool how it is. RAT LOVER FOR LIFE!
