This is my early '90s GT Timberline resto mod. It's a light project I took on as self prescribed therapy to help rehab my injured thumb. It worked splendidly. The thumb is doing much better and the bike is looking and riding great! It started out as this super high-bar comfort (?) bike setup that I bought just for the frame. It's the same model, vintage and color as the bike I rode in college back in the '90s. I had bought that bike new but it was very used by the time I gave it to a friend in the early 2000s.

Down to the bare essentials:

The idea was to build this bike as if it was my original that I had kept and upgraded with more modern parts over time. I wanted to have a 1x drive train, disc brakes and comfortable ergos. All accomplished and it's pretty awesome now. Build thread can be found here:

This 1x setup is fantastic! All the gearing I need with a low enough granny for the long steep climbs around here.

I really love these Meal Replacement bars:

It's really amazing how good this bike is on the trail. It's a blast to ride! It still has that 90s vintage feel to it but it's so much more capable than my bike was back in the day. With the wide tall bars and the Brooks Flyer saddle it's really comfortable too.

I am very happy with the way this project turned out and I'll be putting many happy miles on it. Especially after I switch to tubeless tires so I don't get so many flats.

I mean, what's not to like? It's a vintage mtb frame with new and old twists; 1x drive with a huge cassette range, modern fork, red ano bling from BITD, bigger gnarly tires, and then the vintage look with the Brooks and those luscious bars! You did 'er up right, Pondo!

Seriously cool.

Always had a soft spot for those triple triangles. And it’s from mtb-ings golden era (maybe I’m biased by spending most of my mid teenage years on a 95’ Kona 😆)

Love what you’ve done with the build. The stem and the bar looks hot and a really sets this one apart.

Bravo, a great turn around for a old GT. I have one of them in storage. Now you have given me ideas.
