Rig a Bendix manual 2-speed

So, I have an old Bendix manual 2-speed wheel laying around. Hub is a little crusty on the outer shell, but otherwise a nice smooth hub. Is there a way to operate this hub without the original shift knuckle and shifter? I have seen some 3-speeds that use a knuckle that pushes a rod in rather than using a pull-chain to shift gears.

The correct knuckle looks cheap enough. I have a huffy 2-speed shifter from an 80's mtb, if that might work.
