Going to give the build off a go. I have some ideas, but the biggest question on the table is rust or paint? More to come.

'That is rust Ron, paint is generally much smoother to the touch, reflects light better and usually doesn't leave a trail when you ride!"

You could play around with the various ways to bring the patina out of the rust...and if you don't like any of the results, paint!

'Rusty' ^ makes a good point. If you can peel back enough of the rust in the frame and leave some of the underlying patina / original color that might turn out pretty cool. Then you can always add a little color, or faux rust later for your own custom effect.

My '30s Hawthorne was mostly rust when I started, and with some cleaning up you can see the result below:

I find it a fun challenge to make a bike like that very ride-able again while maintaining that untouched look. It's all in what you want. If you want a cool rat, leave that originality intact. But most people here tend to like shiny things.

I like them shiny all the way to flat corroded!

I happen to have a very similar Rollfast to that one that is shiny, but I love yours that way too. I recently clear coat a rusty old bike, and I really like the way it turned out.

That shiny rust look that Rat Pilot posted might be the best way to go with this build. Makes it look like it's been rubbed down with used motor oil. Very cool!

Usually, boiled linseed oil. Available at hardware stores, it shines and protects. Should be reapplied yearly.

Some progress has been made, but it may have put me into class 2. Cut the seat post out. Put some arch to it with a torch & old bike rim. More photos soon. Hopefully my tires come in on Monday.

So I have interest in building some custom bicycles for personal use. I come across this build off on Facebook so I told my self do it. I’m in the middle of some home improvement/projects but this bike project could be a stress relief and test before the I go all out. So my theme was build a Custom 24” Bike for a child. This is what I came up with

So, Ron, yeah if you do a frame mod, cut and weld like you did on this build, then it is definitely Class 2. I didn't check to see if you moved it over there or not. Secondly, we usually like to see a photo of the 'drive side', shows off the chain guard if there is one (there is on yours) and it's kind of the 'best side' for presentation of the bike. Oddly, (no pun intended) all of your photos above are of the 'non drive side' of your build?

Thank you for the info. It’s very helpful. I had fun with this build off & learned a lot. I moved Finished photos to class 2 finished build. Thanks to everyone that put the build off on. It’s a very cool activity. And I look forward to the next one.
