Met some flea market folks selling two red his hers 1964 schwinns,a racer and collegiate for 600.00 for the pair. They claimed one sold on ebay for 308.00 plus shipping. They were right it was super clean and black 65 Racer and did sell for 308.00.I had seen the decal before but didnt think much of it and have NEVER heard another hardcore bike guy mention the magic hat.
I feel I am a well knowledged schwinn guy owning roughly 40 some schwinns at the moment but am clueless on this magic hat deal.Cant find any web info on the subject.Normally i get lightweight schwinns cheap or I dont bother with them,600.00 about made me fall over.
Can someone fill me in?Have I missed some super rare/valuable schwinn niche?

Are you talking about a schwinn racer with the top hat decal on the seat tube?

Both the racer and collegiate at the flea market had it.I guess from what ive found in the last few minutes its called a Top Hat decal or hat in the ring rather than Magic Hat.

Yeah i don't think they are that rare. I'm working on a schwinn racer right now and it had the top had decal also

It was an emblem used by WW1 US fighter pilots on their planes in 1917-1918. Here is the "hat in the ring" emblem on Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker's Neuport 28. The emblem might be even older than WW1, not sure. Gary

Now that's some awesome information. I like it.

I've had a few Racers with it and I believe my early New Worlds have it too.

Here is a picture for those who don't know. (My bike now but Rat Rod's picture  )

More info from Google.

"Schwinn incorporated a decal with the logo of the 94th Aero Pursuit Squadron from World War I. The design depicts an upside down top hat encircled by a ring, and it was made famous by Eddie Rickenbacker of the 94th Squadron, who pre-war had enjoyed fame as a race car driver. The association with a celebrated military unit as well as a successful racer made for a great marketing tool with Schwinn's Racer model."

Seems to have been the standard offer for the day, and not something unusual. It's different from all the other Schwinn logos that were used, but it's on all the '64 bikes, like my Nov. 64 "Rat Racer".

It's one of my favorite bikes. That pic is old, since then the bars have been flipped and the chainguard finished, using a new Racer decal and a Krate decal sectioned together to spell "RAT Racer".

2-speed rear, fake tank over the top tube, red rims, stubby fenders... this bike likes going to the coffee shop to terrorize the shiny fixies in the rack!
