Schwinn Spitfire year?

I'm trying to find out what year this is. I have other Schwinns and have found out the years by searching the serial numbers but I can't find this one. I'll guess it's Aug of 57. It looks like 7R84039. That doesn't match up with the 7 series in 57 because it's past the end number, but the R without the 7 puts it there in Aug 57 also. I think the number was struck wrong. It looks like a 57 to me.

That is the number stamped on it. I wasn't able to find it in any of the lists that I have read. I emailed a guy about it before and he said the number didn't sound right. It looks all original, I'm not sure if I'll give it to my girlfriend to ride around town or resell it.

That "R" is strange...if that's what it is. At any rate, Aug. of '57 sounds right for that model of middleweight. Gary

So the R is what's weird? I dropped the 7 off the front and entered into the one serial number identifier on this section and it worked. It came up as a 55 or 57.

The other way to tell is when you remove the cranks. A 2 digit year may be on the center of the crank arm. My money is on 57.
