Shifter question

I've got an old 10 speed that uses friction thumb shifters. Can the shifters be swapped out for indexed grip shifters?

You can, but unfortunately it's not just the shifters that you'll need to change for the indexing to work. You'll also need to replace the rest of the drivetrain...the chain, the rear derailleur and the freewheel. The new freewheel made be too wide to work with your old back wheel as well. If you want front indexing you'll also need to replace the crankset.
