those kits are cool but spensive :p
but isnt all cool stuff usually spensive

That looks like quite the machine! I'd like to try it sometime
Do you know how much it weighs?

I've seen lower cost home built versions (up here in crazy MN)
This was Ice Chopper (courtesy of the web, I lost my pics) at the Art Shanty Project
He was riding really well on the 1/4 mile ice track, then let "amateurs" give it a spin :D

I like using 2 wheels myself and I taught my wife a couple of years ago
Going across frozen Lake Calhoun, she's a trooper!

Here she is chasing the pedal powered 4 wheeled mobile fishing shack

Been using my MTB with wide snow tires but it's heavy
This is in 2010 when we totaled 93" of snow for the season

Just got a lightweight, single-speed bike put together. Did great in deep snow (~10")

Of course, MN is also the home of Surly Pugley too

Maybe some other people got some wilder ways of snow biking. Skipton??

Thanks for a cool thread
Steve

It looks like the manufacturer of that half track deal is out of business. Their website is totally gone. I thought wouldn't it be cool put one of those kits on a Felt MP? but leave a knobby tire up front. Like a bicycle version of a military half track. Anyways If I was better at photoshop I would mock that up. A buddy of mine in Mpls is involed in the Minneapolis Fat Bikes group and he recently posted this picture:

He has a Salsa Mukluk frame and is running 4" wide tires on 82mm rims.

Regards,

I'd love to get a fat tire surly or similar up here in MN.
I saw at least a dozen at Freewheel bike
Couldn't belive they were going to sell that many expensive bikes
Guess they're cheaper than a high end road bike
Seen some on CL but still over $1000
They are cool and probably worth it, but out of my price range...

I build this bike at the end of last winter mostly out of left over parts hanging around the shop. It was too late in the season to really get to use it in the snow much, so I'm waiting for the first real snow of the winter here to take it for a ride. Theoretically, we might see some this weekend...

MPLSCOASTER.. Trust me Bro thats a real skibike and New Mexico has mountains that only you can dream of where you live.

Most ski areas sit at 10,000 ft and get more then it's share of snow. Go ahead google it.

Now I'm laughing.

I wonder iff these actually worked,

Sorry Big Al, never meant to offend. Should have googled NM skiing before the response
Been only a little ways into New Mexico and in the summer time...
I think it was the picture of rocks (with no snow to be seen) that threw me off

I never meant to imply it wasn't a real skibike. It must be awesome with the suspension
I've tried a much cruder version without suspension down our (not so steep) snow hills and it was fun

You're right, we defintely don't have 10,000 foot mountain ski resorts
I think Lutsen ski resort is ~1700 feet elevation (off of Lake Superior)
Lots of XC skiing and a steady increase of snow biking in Mpls

I remember when you built your bike. Lots of cool features. I hope you get some snow soon

Got lucky and found a used "snowjack" at the goodwill. Hacked up the bracketry and bolted it up to a 20" Huffy

It's getting swapped to an old multigear ladies frame soon. Easier to get traction, and safer for the manly stuff
