Re: ...old Iver Johnson...

That's not actually an Iver Johnson. IJ frames used forged rear dropouts and had a small diameter crank hanger for their proprietary two piece crankset. IJ's also used a fork with a forged crown (shaped sort of like a Packard radiator surround with tubular fork blades.)

Re: snyder

chainring is? I did not know what it was i looked up on google and found bikes just like this claiming to be IJ...what do you think it is??? the original paint under was black and had white diamonds...and the rear fender brace connects to the drop stand tabs that dis connect..

Re: ...Elgin board track style...

That pattern chain ring was used on some Elgins, but Elgin itself is only a part answer as Sear used many suppliers to produce their line. The configuration of the rear fender stays with the integral drop stand brackets is an H.P. Snyder feature. Snyder did supply similar bikes to Sears so that is a likely builder for this frame. The fork though is at least a couple of years newer than the frame as none of the bikes from the period of the frame used fully forged forks.

All that aside, it is a nice looking build with a great created/amended patina.

Re: snyder

thanks...did snyder frames paint with the diamond pattern? i have seen a few elgins that were painted that way and same fenders as well and im gonna look for the right front fork also! thanks for all the info.

Re: ...Snyder board track style...

H.P. Snyder was one of the “Big Three” of the bike manufacturing world in the mid 30’s. They are best known for the bikes that were manufactured for and marketed by D.P. Harris as their house brand, Rollfast.

Between Harris and their many brands and Sears and Montgomery Ward, Snyder produced bikes with a variety of paint patterns and darts and diamond appeared on many. The star sprocket does feed the notion the bike may have originally been sold through Sears as an Elgin but it is possible that it was replaced at some time or that it was a pattern used on bikes branded for other retailers beyond Sears.

While the exact original branding of the frame may never be proven beyond at least a shadow of doubt, it is very likely a Snyder frame. Another thing to examine is the area where the main tubes meet the crank hanger. Snyder crank hangers typically have short, lug like rings that locate and reinforce the joints.

As for the original fork, A Moto-Balloon Snyder would use a Quadra-Plate fork with four flat plates (two are back-to-back so it looks like only three plates) and the early versions of the fork have heavy blades and a flat rather than domed top plate.

Re: ...Snyder board track style...

man you always have a lot of knowledge thanks a lot im gonna go look at frame tubes and see...i have seen some Snyder's that had that paint scheme and star sprocket....would serial numbers help to figure out for sure?

Re: ...Snyder board track style...

I have collected many Snyder serial numbers and they help to a degree, sometimes only because they look like Snyder stampings and eliminate other builders. Beginning in 1940 Snyder serial numbers do take on a pattern that suggests a decoding for the year. Previous to that there seems to be more than one pattern at work and I have not been able to derive dates from those numbers. If you post pictures I can compare them to the numbers I have but it probably won’t yield a year-date for the frame.
