Some Raleigh 28 inch Q's

I'm curious about the Raleigh 28 inch bikes now that I have a 28 inch bicycle project. Do the 28 inch Raleigh wheels accept more standard tires than early 28 American 28 inch wheels? Or do they require special Raleigh/other tires? What hubs did Raleigh 28 inch wheels typically have? Did they ever come with three speeds, and if so, did they ever come with three speed coaster brake hubs? Thanks, and help would be greatly appreciated.

yes they did come with 3 speeds most if not all are rod brake, and i think your stuck with the special tires which are still avalible

I would think that the majority of them would have a three speed hub, but they also made them with a single speed hub. I don't know if the brits were into the whole coaster brake idea as most of the ones that I have seen have either had rod brakes or brake calipers. Here is a photo of what looks to be a DL-1 with a single speed hub.

pretty sure that the ralieghs take standard clincher tires which are cheap and readily availiable...
easy way to tell is if the tire has the tire and tube seperate.
if thats the case you can get them for about the same price as 20/24/26" tires

What kind of special tires would they take? The same sew up or singletube (? terminology) primitive stuff that the early motobike type wheels would take?

Thanks, and might anyone be able to verify this with absolute certainty? I might very well just sell off my old wheels for a set of Raleigh 3 speed 28 inchers if they exist and take standard tires...

And if anyone has a Raleigh with rod brakes, could you please post some up close pictures of the brakes, especially where they mount? I might fit some up to my older frame if it is possible.

I have a couple of sets of 28" Raleigh wheels. One set has a New Departure hub laced into it and the other has the original 3-spd (on my Excelsior and Peerless bikes). I also have a pair of Canadian built 28x1 1/2 wheels that accept 700x 40c tires (see my Columbia arch frame build). Electra sells the 700x40c tires in cream.

I have read that 700 series tubular cyclocross tires will fit the old 28" rims, but I have not tried them. They are cheaper than the pneumatic tires that Coker sells. I have also come across a place in Georgia that sells tires for the old 28" wood rims, but I can't remember the name. You may find them through the CABE forum. Hope these things help. I know the 28" wheels can be frustrating to find the correct tire for (at a decent price).

Schwalbe sells several different 28" tires, I suspect, but am not certain, that they are all designed for 700c rims.

Heres some pictures of my 69 DL 1. It has Sturmey Archer 28" Rims and is a three speed, Mine has older Good Year 28 X 1 1/4 tires. I can get this size tires from several scorces. I just bought this at the K C swap two weeks ago and I haven't detailed it yet.
