the head tube is 1 1/8, but when you put a 1 1/8 steerer tube in it the reinforcements for the top tubes don't let it line up..

OK...now the wifes 80's cruiser has the same deal. there must be a headset for 1" forks for these....

So the standard 1" cups fall right out of it? That's odd....

not really, since there is no 'standard' 1" headset. there is the current (more or less) 1" mtb/road headset with one diameter of cups and 2 common crown race diameters. there is the 1" bmx headset with slightly larger cups. and finally there is the 1" wald headset with it's 3 crushable bulges that has the largest diameter of the bunch....:)

well, the wifes bike had a nice crusty one I'm stealing for the spaceliner and I ordered some BMX spacers for her.

BUT ... as I can tell, the only difference is the width of teh cup flange to make it 1 1/8" , aside from the cups , the rest of it is standard 1" stuff..

the chrome one is a suntour 1"

if her upper cone and top nut fit your fork it's not a "1 1/8" headset" per se, it's one of the "1" headset" sizes i mentioned earlier :D

oh it takes standard 1' parts.... and a 1 1/8" to 1" BMX adapter to install a standard headset in both frames..

wiki lists the standard sizes here near the bottom..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headset_(bicycle_part)

that's what i'm saying- it's not a 1 1/8" HEADSET per se, it just uses relatively large cups in comparison to the rest of the 1" parts- it's designed for thinner walled head tubes than on say, a schwinn frame. we see these on frames ranging from prewar snyder built ones all the way to 80's huffys and murrays.

i guess that would fall under "uncommon" in the 1" wiki listing, although they're readily available. apparently wikipedia also considers the typical 1" bmx headset "uncommon" and not worth listing as well, even though it was used on every old school bmx bike from the 70's through the mid 90's, not to mention nearly every chicago built schwinn since before WW2.....must've been written by somebody from 'bicycling' or 'velonews'

the reducer will certainly let you use a higher quality headset. out of curiosity, does the adapter reduce to fit a 1" road/mtb cup diameter headset (30.2mm) or a 1" bmx diameter headset (32.7mm)?

so you may still need to buy a bmx headset? fwiw the wald 4080 (under ten bucks) would have done the trick.....

i only bring this up because i see folks making this situation needlessly complex on a regular basis..... :)

well I tried looking everywhere for the dimensions on that 4080 headset.. even the wald llc catalog just says it uses #401 cups, which they list as "for american bikes" with no dimensions.

do you have a link to someplace that actually says what size it is? wish i knew this a couple days ago.... :x

ha! i was just thinking the lack of published dimensions was the reason nobody ever ends up with the wald unless they're told about it, logged on, and here was your post :D

it's hard to measure the wald since it depends on 3 lumps for a tight fit and doesn't have a consistent round diameter. all i can say is it's bigger than the bmx size and looks like it would indeed fit in a 1 1/8 compatable headtube when held up to a mtb frame. the only real problem with the wald is the really cheap crown race. sometimes i buy a cheap 'pyramid' headsdet that uses the same bearing retainers to get a better race, keep the extra bearings, and throw the rest into the parts bin....

Ok I just picked up another Spaceliner and tried the "standard" headset cups, the kind I have a stack of that are all identical...
Scrumblero you are absolutely right and I've never encountered this before (not that I've been messing with old bikes very long).

So is there a solution? Everything above reads like Greek to me, or at least nothing jumps out as a "Use this headset".
