I will be upgrading this tire old 3 speed Speedster into a 5 Speed useing parts from this Collegiate donor bike. I took the Speedster out Yesterday for it’s final ride to get a current picture of it, but had to cut it short when I saw a bulge in the severely dry rotted front tire. The first two pictures were taken when I bought these two bikes. The last one is how it looks today.

I managed to get the Speedster on the bike rack today… then decided I needed to straighten up my garage before I disassemble it!

Grandson has a baseball game tomorrow, so maybe get back to it Weds.

Sounds like you've got a solid plan for this Schwinn! Are you going to put a banana seat on it, or are you sticking with something closer to the original seat?

I know it’ll be a 5 speed with 27” tires. Shifter, seat and handlebars are still up in the air. Hopefully I can get it apart tonight and start cleaning up the frame.

I got the Speedster taken apart and cleaned up yesterday. After work today I waxed the frame and fork then cold formed the rear stays 1/2 inch farther apart to fit the 5 spd rim.

I have a can of genuine Schwinn red paint and will probably succumb to my desire to touch up those nasty places on the seat stays where the red has flakes off!

LOVE this build. One of the first ratty projects I ever did (and one of my favorites) was swapping parts off a 26" Ross Europa 10-speed onto a clapped-out Speedster to make a faux Collegiate. It has since been reconfigured, and I have added a few other camelback frame Schwinns to my collection.

That looks great! I like the sprocket you used. Mine will just get the regular Schwinn mag sprocket.

I just went back and reread your RRBBO 16 thread. You have some great looking Camelbacks! I’ve got a small collection of them myself. A Fastback 5 spd, another Fastback frame, the Speedster I’m working on, another 26” frame and 2 27” 10 speeds. And that’s only the camels! I need to let go of some of my bikes. I have way more than I have room for….

Quick update on my Splegiate! All the tear down cleaning polishing and regreasing has been completed! YEAH! The last of the new parts I ordered have arrived and I mounted the new Schwalbe tires on the shiny rims.

This is where I left off a couple of days ago. Yesterday I put the wheels on and tried to install the new chain but the front sprocket was too thick. I took the crank out and replace the sprocket with the small one off a 10 speed. This fixed the fitment issue but I not sure I like the looks of it. I’ll get a picture of it today and post it.

I have a few spare multi-speed capable Schwinn chainrings that are not from doubles such as the ten-speed one you are currently unusure of using. If you decide against that one and want a Schwinn chainring, I'll get one to you if you wish.
