I looked through my chainrings for something that might work well with the 4 spoke wheels, First test was this 3G/PHAT one. Possible, but I wasn't quite feeling it.

Found this ring with four swirls and found a modern semi-dogleg that I pulled from a Taiwan Schwinn SS Sport years ago. I'll keep this one for now.

Then it was chainguard testing time. It's fun to have a cool mix of goodies.

The zeppelin guard (bottom) didn't look right and neither did the Huffy (2nd to last) so I didn't bother taping them up.

The fat Columbia might just be too big, but I did test it.

But the one that I like the most is the 2nd from the top. I can't remember if this is Shelby or what, but I really like how well it plays with the rack and seems to flow in the space nicely. I don't think I will fabricate the mounts yet, but I do really like this one.

I think the one in the first and third pics looks the best

What's your 'ride eval ' ?

Well, I just got back and ate. I was out riding for 2 hours having a blast. Lot of work updates and ride updates to come. It has been a long but satisfying SteamRoller day!!!!!

I love the way the bike rides by the way. Super comfy cruise.

Thanks, but I think the 2nd one looks best with the rack and build. 1 was a possibility, 3 and 4 just didn't look right at all when I held it up to the build.

Saw this pic pop up on my Instagram.. thought I know that No Cycling sign.. “wow is King all ready riding” sure is!! Looking good

It was a fun ride. Now I gotta digest the pics of the work I did before the ride and post them. More ride pics may have to wait until tomorrow. :D

I found the offset cog that I got from @ind-chuckz when I had him build a 60mm wheelset for me (which I still haven't used).

This gives me the wheel clearance that I needed. It's also got quite a few more teeth on it. Should be an easy pedal.

Well, after I got the offset cog on I threw a chain on and nothing was rubbing.
BUT!!!!!! Something wasn't right. As the wheel rolled there was a vibration like rumble strips on the highway. I knew this was good.

Time for Doctor Kingfish to examine the hub. Well remember this wheelset was made in Mexico, and the hub shell is a welded integral part of the wheel. So no hope of swapping hubs. The hub is an "EVA LC-201R". Never heard of this brand and couldn't find it onlne. So I took out my scalpel and carefully removed the Mexican guts and laid them out on the operating table.

It was greased very well and super clean when I cleaned it off. Nothing was bound up before the disemboweling. So I started examining each part and everything was great except for the larger bearing race on the drive side screwy thingy (medical jargon) looked like it had ripples on it. The bearings themselves looked perfect, but when I rolled them on the race, I could immediated feel the rumble strip palpitations.

This patient is a long way from home and I knew I didn't have any spare Mexican guts lying around. The only hub that was available was this Chinese HiStop hub that I took from my Taiwan Schwinn SS Sport years ago.

20200614_132114.jpg

I disemboweled the old Chinese guts and tried transplanting the Chinese drive side screwy thingy, but the Mexican guts rejected the organ. I was still able to save the Mexican hub, and was able to keep the axle, but I had to perform the first successful Chinese/Mexican Guts Transplant in RRB history.

Due to the life and death atmosphere I was working in with my hands buried in Chinese and Mexican guts, I completely forgot to take any other pictures of the operation.

The patient seemed to be doing well, so I relaxed in Queenfishes zen garden watching cardinals feed their baby. I even got a pic of the momma flying off of my handlebars. We live in the urban heart of the city, so this was a pleasant nature break.

The guts transplant was successful. I really felt lucky that the hub shell accepted the transplant. I would have had to send off to Mexico for replacement EVA hub internals if it didn't work.

Now that I had the offset cog, it put the chain higher and closer to the droput/chainstay area which is where the springer sissy bar legs are mounted. I need to pull them in tight to the frame, so I marked up the frame angle on them and pinched the legs in the vice. Then I filed out the holes to make them square to accept the carriage bolts.

It was just one of those day. Moments of success followed by what's wrong now!!!
Went to mount the wheel with the sissy bar in place and while the wheel didn't hit the frame, it did hit the sissy bar on the left side.

One great thing about this drop double kickstand is that I can remove the wheel and the bike stays supported to work on. Well I had to break out the trusty Park Tool SBW-2 Sissy Bar Widener again. And this time I bolted the lower section to just widen it where I needed it

Ready to ride, right?

20200614_171621.jpg

Well,,,,,,not really, I never installed a headset for all of these mockups.
Kickstand to the rescue again, this time supporting the front while I work on it.

20200614_172005.jpg

I removed the old bearing cups but in order to install the Aheadset, I need to take of about half a millimeter all the way around the outside of the Aheadset bearing cups so that they would fit in my headtube. I used my Park Tool WAM-2 bearing cup placement tool (WhackAMole (block of wood and hammer)).

I am wiped out guys! Lot of work and 2 hour ride that didn't even start until 7pm. The great thing was that people were out and about playing, eating at restaurants, tourists and locals alike, friends and families coming out of church service. It is an awesome sight to see our city vibrant and alive again despite the COVID and despite the civil and uncivil unrest elsewhere.

Here are just a couple of ride photos, I need to hit the sack.

Just a normal day in Savannah. A drag race between an electric wheelchair and a monowheel electric skateboard.

Hanging out with my peeps. These motorcycle dudes really loved the bike. They took more pics than I did. Cool guys

We have cardinals here also, but they are different, the males have a red head with white vest, like a tuxedo. They have attitude with no natural predators except for the feral cats:

But back to the bike.
I like how the chain guard has a straight line that matches up with the lines of the rack and handlebars, looks like the lines they draw to show motion on drawings:

Nice!!
A few posts back, I saw what you did with the bolt and rear nanner/sissybar assembly... is that my idea you stole? (my front fork)

Just kidding, the bike looks good so far! Love the wheels

Cool looking cardinal.

You are right about the bars, rack, and guard. Those sweeping "go fast" lines are definitely there.

Not intentionally, but possibly through osmosis. :D

Nice but one minor problem, when you clip a baseball card to the fork to thwap the spokes it will go thwap (pause) thwap (pause) thwap instead of thwap, thwap, thwap
